That is not their role at all as per the following article Two extra pairs of eyes for referee teams - UEFA.com

They are their to ensure the rules of the game are upheld especially in and around the penalty area. The incident that led to Robbens goal last night would have been within the extra officials area to advise the ref. last night the official may have said something to the ref who could have seen the incident himself and had a different opinion. The extra officials only communicate with the ref via the wireless headsets they don't have flags like the linesmen do, so it's harder to see if they have helped the ref make his decision.

Completely wrong. They even have to come from a higher tier of the refereeing structure than the linesmen because their decisions are likely to have a major impact on a game. Unfortunately, as they have no flag, it's hard to tell just how much input they're having.
