I always thought that he got into the England team on his ability as a captain rather than as an outstanding batsman.

That's just not true. He made his England debut in 1969, under Ray Illingworth, and didn't become captain until 1974. He wasn't even captain in waiting, Tony Lewis was skipper before Denness. He had a test average of just under 40 which, in days of uncovered wickets and little protection for batsmen, was perfectly respectable. It was even higher than that but he suffered at the hands of that fiery lady,Lilian Thomson

Always thought that it took a great deal of selflessness to drop himself when he felt he wasn't up to it.

I must admit I didnt realize his stats were as good as that. I remember him most for being a county Captain rather than a prolific test batsman..

I played for Worthing 3rds once and the opposition had a young fella who bowled like a rocket..... you could hear it hum as it whizzed past your ear.

RIP Mike Denness,
