Gus Poyet left London Road happy with the one point his side earned against Peterborough United tonight, which lifted the Seagulls to fourth in the Championship table.
Both sides had their chances to win with Matthew Upson and Andrew Crofts hitting the bar, while Posh midfielder Tommy Rowe squandered a glorious opportunity from close range, but Poyet was satisfied as the Seagulls moved three points clear of seventh-placed Bolton Wanderers.
He told seagulls.co.uk, “We knew that it would be very difficult because Peterborough are a very good team and they have been on a very good run, beating teams at the top and scoring goals.
“We had to concentrate on doing the basics and being solid then we could look for that chance. There were key moments because on another day we would have scored one of the chances that hit the crossbar but also we could have had a player sent-off on another day too.
“You cannot win every game and we have got to be realistic, and we kept another clean sheet too. It was the kind of result where you consider where we are in the season and you have got to be happy with it.
“Everybody is playing for something and everything can change so quickly. We have got to be better than the teams around us and we keep plugging away.
“That is why a point is so important. We are fourth in the Championship and we have not been in this position for a very long time so we have got to enjoy it.”
The Albion boss confirmed that former Spain international Vicente was not fit enough to be a part of the squad tonight but is hopeful that Kazenga LuaLua and Will Buckley will be available on Saturday, when Blackpool visit the Amex.
“Unfortunately Vicente had some pain around the hip area so could not be involved tonight so we decided to go with the same outfield ten that played at Middlesbrough.
“We look forward to Saturday now where we hope to have a few more players back. We have some players who are quite tired so we could make some changes. Kazenga and Bucka will both be okay, I hope, so we will see what happens.”
Tickets are still available for Albion’s penultimate home game of the season against Blackpool. Purchase online, via the ticketline – 0844 327 1901 – or in person at both ticket offices, located at the Amex and in Queens Road, Brighton.
