In USA/Japan/Australia/New Zealand this is front page, can't-talk-about-anything-else news. In Iran and it's top story for one day at max

it's up there... That casualty figure will rise. The 2003 Bam earthquake killed 20,000 or so,

Hold on...wasn't Dingodan posting something about the CIA and Earthquake weapons recently...or was it Israel.

Either way, I expect one of the tin foil hat brigade will be along shortly.

Very close, just across the sea. 1 hour flight away! although Iran is a massive country!

Vy. seismically active area. The Iranians briefly discussed moving their capital to Isfahan at one polnt a decade ago, Brasilia-style, since Teheran sits right on top of the same fault that leveled Bam

7.8 is fairly high, though the real monsters run in the 8-5 9.0 range. The Richter scale is logarithmic, so an increase of a whole number -- say from 6.8 to 7.8 -- is an increase of x10 in energy released.

Rural area, casualties not yet assessed . This from the Iran News Service , Press TV

"Thirty-four people have been killed and scores injured in southwestern Pakistan after a powerful earthquake hit Iran’s southeastern province of Sistan and Baluchestan, near the Pakistani border.

The major tremor measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale hit a sparsely populated rural area between the Iranian provincial cities of Saravan and Khash at a depth of 95 kilometers at 3:14 p.m. local time (1044 GMT) on Tuesday."
There is at least one gone in Iran too. Humanity is universal , tragedy is tragedy whether in Iran or Boston........
