Oktoberfest

Me and 5 mates are looking to go to Oktoberfest this year, just wondering if anyones been and if anyone has tips on where to stay - we want to do it as cheap as possible!! Flights don't appear to be an issue - about £60 each, but VERY hard to find anywhere cheap to stay!!!! Also, what sort of money are you looking at over a long weekend (Fri-Tues)? I'm budgeting for about £600 inc flights and board - is this too little?? I thought I would ask the all knowledgable brain trust that is NSC as I'm sure there are many other like minded beer and lederhosen affecionado's on here

Brilliant - a group of 9 of us went over in 2006 and it was great. Stayed in a small hotel about 10-15 minutes walk from the beer tents.

The beer is great - You don't get as drunk on it as you would do over here. Don't get me wrong, you are still smashed, but it seemed to give less of a hangover next morning.

Think it cost me about £450 all in - but that was in 2006.

Everyone is really friendly (poss something to do with the amount of beer drunk) and considering the number of people there, we didn't see any trouble. Brilliant time - would highly recommend it.

If you want cheap look into camping we did it one year and the weather was not an issue, it was just outside of town but easy to get to on the local trains. Be aware that it gets absolutely rammed at the weekends so you might struggle to get in the beer halls, not sure if you can actual book ahead.

Another option is fly somewhere like Frankfurt and get a train, German trains are great and not too expensive.

Agreed except for the "not getting as drunk" I have been absolutely wrecked - one year got locked in down in the underground and slept on the station and another year I woke up several miles outside of the city by a river, which I then fell in and still no idea how i got there. Much as its brilliant I vowed never to go again it was just too dangerous, I love Munich.

Amazing time.

Did the camping and hostel last year which was £55 a night each due to the demand.

Beers are about £8 for a liter Stein.

I spent about 120-150 a day from start to finish.

If you're going on the last Saturday be prepared to be there early, it's chaos otherwise.

I have stayed in a variety of naff hotels for Oktoberfest, all of which were eye-wateringly expensive. I've never camped but been with those that have and it's apparently okay if the weather is good.

Your budget sounds rather optimistic, although it depends how many days you are planning to attend the festival for (when I've been for more than a couple of days we've done alternate days at the festival).

If you have not been before the thing you need to know is that it is very hard to get served beer in Oktoberfest. Seriously. It is table service in all of the big tents but all the tables are sold out in advance so that if you turn up on the day you have little chance of drinking in the places you actually want to drink and instead get pushed out to sweaty bars full of similar disappointed newbies. Get a table in a tent and you will love it.

Thanks for the heads up guys. Looks like we might stay in another city (Frankfurt, or possibly even over the border in the Czech Republic) as it is almost prohibitively expensive (hotels already charging £200-300 pppn!!!). However, can stay in Frankfurt at a reasonable hotel for £75-80 quid a night and train it over there!

Been twice. No recollection of any detail of either of the hotels I stayed in.

I do remember ordering pan fried calf diaphragm and some sort of udder dish in a place that specialises in offal. Don't go to any place that says they do this sort of thing. Stick to big glasses of beer and roast chicken.

I stayed in a place called Starnberg, about 15 miles SW of Munich. Very nice town, on the lake, with an excellent S Bahn service into Munich city centre. Better bet than Frankfurt !

8 of us went last year and are going again this year, we spent about 300-350 quid each in 4 days last year, we never paid for any trains to or from Tandern where we stayed, but i would advise you to buy a ticket as the fines are very severe apparantly, we only did it cos on the first journey we only just got to the station in time and jumped on the train, nobody checked for tickets on the train or at munich, so from then on...

Dachau is nice, as is Altomunster if you can get accom there, both are on direct train routes. As others have said you wont get in to the beertents unless you have pre-booked, and it may be to late already as they start booking a year in advance so we were told.

Oh and none of us were hungover at all, makes you wonder what the **** is in the beer here

Also if you get the chance to go and see Bayern or 1860 play at the Allianz Arena, then do so, it is a far better experience than watching football here.

Went 3 times in my younger days, but couldn't stand the pace now!
Have you been to the Hofbrauhaus in the middle of Munich? Great fun, mixture of tourists and locals.

I wish you well - I went to Munich on a trip to see Springsteen a couple of years back and it's a fantastic city and one that I must go back to
Far too much to take in on a 2/3 day trip (although I appreciate that your main purpose for going is not to sightsee !)
