FFP question

Speaking to a QPR fan over the weekend and he's convinced Rangers will not be affected by the FFP regulations and said they can incorporate all their sponsorship money to get over their income from gate receipts.

So technically a filthy rich dodgy businessman could sponsor a players kit for the season for let's say £50 million and this all comes under income.

Is this true?

Isn't that how Man City are getting round it? Some multi million sponsorship for the stadium or something.

There is meant to be something in the FFP to stop that happening. Man City were/are being investigated because they got a very large shirt sponsorship deal from a company that is run by someone with close links to their owner. Uefa to investigate Manchester City over Etihad sponsorship deal - Premier League - Football - The Independent

This was recently reiterated when latest financial figures were released: Manchester City and PSG must prove they are not financial fair play system - European - Football - The Independent

http://www.financialfairplay.co.uk/financial-fair-play-explained.php point 4:
UEFA are aware that owners of clubs could look to inflate a club’s profitability by injecting funds into clubs via artificially inflated commercial deals. Paris St-Germain recently announced a huge sponsorship deal via a body that is connected to the club owners. For this reason UEFA FFP rules require any transaction from a ‘related part’ (i.e. a company or body connected to the club owners) to be assessed to ensure it was a genuine transaction at a ‘fair value’. UEFA has the power to adjust any artificial ‘mates rates’ deals and apply a lower value to the Break Even calculation. This assessment will be carried out by the CFCB panel.

It's a loophole at the moment, but I see FFP evolving quite rapidly to close these over time. Have the Prem actually signed up to it yet? Rules re teams relegated from the Prem:

Clubs relegated from the Premier League will not be subject to sanctions in their first season in the Championship as long as they have met their financial obligations under Premier League regulations. They would, however, be subject to the potential of a Fair Play Tax if they achieved promotion in their first season in the Championship whilst not complying with the FFP regulations.

A UEFA panel evaluates any suspect deals to see if they're above market value. If they decide they are you're in bother. I suspect a £50m players kit sponsorship is above market value.
