The critics' critic has sadly passed away. After surviving one battle with cancer he had part of his jaw removed but continued to write reviews, he suffered a fall recently that led to discovering another cancer. It was announced this morning/last night that he would be reducing his workload, and this evening it was announced he has passed away.

He is the guy all critics aspired to be and will be, even critics of other mediums, and he will be missed by many people.

This is a sad story. I've never heard of Mr Ebert, but he's clearly a well respected critic. This is already a bad year. Sad losses of Reg Presley, Kevin Ayres, Mindy Mcready, James Herbert and no doubt others I don't recall. And today's news that Iain Banks won't last the year. Huge losses.
