Although back in those days wasn't it easier to get in without a ticket? In which case the recorded figure is actually lower than real attendance. And today they report a figure higher than the actual attendance, so you work out the rest.

Spoilsort......Ok reword the sentence.. This season more supporters have paid to watch BHA than any other season in their rich history. Yes?

I Googled and came up with a Palace BBS thread that compared both clubs attendances since 1975. According to the graph Albion's average attendance in our late 70s heyday was spot on 25,000.

The graph was notable for showing Palace attendance slumping from 30K in 1980 to 10K just 2 years later. They stayed in that 7K - 10K trough until the arrival of Wright and Bright.

I believe our attendances were higher in the late 70's when we were in the Second Division ( Championship now ) than our 4 seasons that followed in the top flight. Palace had to win their last home game to pip us for the title and got 52,000 ish at Selhurst for that fixture.
Does this indicate that exciting winning football was more appealing than seeing your team get turned over regularly in the top flight or is that just simplification and there were more deep rooted social reasons.?

Makes me laugh that they put our large crowds down to 'plastics' jumping on the bandwagon - yes your average 'plastic' SKY football fan is really going to rush to pay £25+ to watch second tier football against the likes of clubs such as Barnsley, Burnley, Blackpool, Peterborough and Palace aren't they?

Just looked it up in Carder and Harris. Prior to the Amex our best seasons for average attendances (over 20,000) were:

77/78 - 25,264
79/80 - 24,795
58/59 - 22,460
78/79 - 22,074
76/77 - 20,183

So only five season in our history have we had average crowds of over 20,000, and all late 70s except for 1958/59. Interestingly the average for 80/81 (when the novelty of being a struggling top division team had long worn off) was 18,969 and it was then downhill all the way.

EDIT: Should point out that this is HOME LEAGUE attendances only.

Its hard to compare I think I paid 20p to get in as a kid, and if I was broke would go in for free at half time. I imagine a 25 plus crowd now generates in comparison more cash for the club, than an undeclared 30 K plus of yesteryear.

Makes up for the misery gates we got at Gillingham.

You've missed out 2011/12 - 20,028

I am no longer allowed to comment on attendances - but "a friend" of mine says you are correct with those pre Amex figures. We are nailed on for over 26k this season which will be our best ever - JCL's and plastics - I love them.:albion2::kiss:

Although the attendance was pegged back to 28k capacity when we were promoted to Div 1.

At present, after 20 home LEAGUE matches, our average attendance is 25,822 (beating the previous record by 558).

In order to beat the previous record, we must average 21,543 in our final three league matches.

In order to beat 26,000, we must average 27,186 in our final three matches.

True, but we didn't need it. Our average attendances in the top flight:

79/80 - 24,795
80/81 - 18,969
81/82 - 18,247
82/83 - 14,676

It's better now. I can walk in the ground at 2.50 if I like and not have to queue from 1.45 to get in.

How was it it easy to get in without [a ticket] or paying? I always found a grotty little wooden door you had to pass through, pay over your wedge, then push through a rusty turnstyle, can't think of any way to get in otherwise.

Not quite right. Had the capacity been greater, the attendances would have been far higher for big matches such as Man U, Liverpool etc. This would have increased the average a fair bit.

My dad said he used to go to Division one games in the seventies and could slip the turnstile operator some money and he'd let him in. I think before 89 the ticket system was pretty lax too but don't quote me on that.
