Gratfeul for some advice from those many of you down that way.

Having taken voluntary redundancy from work a while back I'm now attempting to get back into the job market and was considering moving down Brighton way in about August. In the meantime I want to try and set some work set up down that way. Even if it's temporary in the short term.

I'd be grateful if any of you have experience of job agencies down there and could recommend anywhere. Most of my experience over the last ten years has been in the public sector, both admin and government policy work. But I did also once run my own jewellery business and have quite a bit of retail experience. Any good agencies that people know of in those areas, grateful if you could let me know.

Many thanks in advance.

I found that Red Flag have their finger in plenty of pies, but it's all telemarketing stuff. And it's all low income stuff to be fair.

Manpower is the answer.

Good luck squire, it's tough out there at the moment.

Well Manpower have been one of the most unhelpful agencies I have ever used. Don't accept CVs in branch have to email them, then no reply. Apply for a job and nothing (not event a thanks but no thanks), very rude.
I hear that Tate are quite good and have a fair bit of stuff with the Pensions Regulator (or did). Personally speaking the smaller specialist agencies are better but all depends on what field you want to get into.

I'm looking for something different myself but it seems it's all about call centres or care services. Whatever happened to manufacturing ?

Manpower are the recruiters for Amex so you could get some admin work through them.

Sadly like Rookie said they are understaffed and overworked, which means they are slow to respond and poor at keeping in touch.

The best thing you can do is register at them all, and they will let you know when something comes up (maybe)

The Astral Planes, man...
I'm signed up with three - Page, Reed & Hays. Avoid them all like the plague, they are useless. They all promise the earth and deliver nothing. The only follow-up I've had is a phonecall from Page, they phoned at about midday one Monday and asked if I could attend an interview in Haywards Heath at 3pm that afternoon, FFS!

I think they all just try to fill their quotas to earn their bonuses and sod the mug who gets humiliated at an interview they are totally unprepared for. Sorry - rant over..

CV library and other on line agencies are the clearing houses for work, they put up vacancies for loads of agencies and give you the chance to put your CV out there for speculative searches.
Just make sure you put keywords in that describe special aspects of your experience so that wordgrabbers can find you.

Do not go for Red Flag, they are utter utter utter utter utter UTTER gash. Put me forward for jobs I'd already applied for (and told them about), jobs that didn't exist, jobs that changed description at interview.....absolute sharks.

Brighton & Hove jobs dot com.............. It's on the front of the shirt.

I know from experience, it is great!

Due to microscopic fees, many employers are turning to them and shunning Reed etc.

The choice of jobs is good, and keep an eye out, as new ones in each sector appear almost daily.

Cheers everybody for response. I'm thinking Brighton and Hove Jobs might be the best bet!

Here, there and everywhere
Keep an eye on the Civil Service jobs website for public sector policy jobs, also I have found Total jobs and the Guardian to be good. W4MPjobs.org has central government/parliamentary jobs (including policy).

With the public sector as it is right now, expect agency and/or contracts for a set length of time, rather than full-time employment contracts.
