Goals from centre backs

Looking at Greer's chance at the end last night, anyone else feel our centre backs don't contribute with enough goals?? Most other sides have them contributing a couple a season, yet ours all have poor records?

Greer - 105 games 2 Goal

Greer - 2 in about 100 games
Upson 0 in 11
El-Abd 5 in about 300
Dunk 0 in about 50

Something worth looking into?? Upson has better records elsewhere, and has 2 in 20 odd for England, thats a higher level with goals against Germany in World Cup etc?

It would be good if they chipped in with a few more. Hopefully, VVD will sort that out next year.

Upson will score for us. He played 15 times for stoke and scored 2 goals this season. Played 11 games so far for us...

I've been predicting an Upson goal since he arrived. Hopefully, he's saving it for the play offs.

Our centre backs really should be chipping in with 3/4 goals a season. Work needed on our set pieces?

Go back a few years and most centre back pairings would be good for 10-15 goals a season between them. Maybe defences are better organised now and there is a reluctance for sending them up and risk being caught on the break ?

Really? At Brighton?

Not an excuse per-say but I think part of the reason for this is our instistance on playing short corners probably at least 75% of the time, Centre Backs normally get headed goals from corners from getting a run on it and using their heading ability(needed as a CB) to power it in. Can't help but feel these short corners are responsible for the lack of defensive goals.

Same could be said for Bridcutt.

Disagree - Most top class defensive midfielders rarely get on the score sheet. Mainly because there is a certain area where they are supposed to be and stay and that is not in the final third so therefore goal chances are very rare. Bridcutt saves us enough goals anyway, last nights block shows that.

We were saying this about our midfield last season. Thankfully we now we have Orlandi and Lopez chipping in every now and then. It probably doesn't help that our CB rarely travel forward and neither of them are exactly giants, so sometimes struggle at corners.

Bridcutt can shoot, as those two howitzers in the promotion season showed.

you shouldnt really be expecting any goals from the CBs, a few a season is a bonus. with our short corners, its hardly a surprise they dont get any.

They'd be more likely to if we put a few more corners and wide freekicks into the box rather than play it short and pass it about before it comes to nothing

Greer's problem, even though he comes up for corners, is that he can't really head for toffee. How often do you see him put his head through the ball, rather than a kind of lofted effort generally of the top of his head? Very rarely.

It's far more like to see him score from a corner by powering a shot from the edge of the area. AEA can be the same, but has seemed to have improved from the Mr 50p head of his earlier career.

Upson, with his Stoke credentials, might be worth a cheeky quid for 1st goalscorer.
