Albion in the Community are giving 16 or 17-year-olds the chance to study for a Level 3 BTEC and play futsal for Albion.
*
The club’s charitable arm is offering an exciting opportunity for youngsters to pursue a Futsal & Education Scholarship with the football club.
*
Futsal originated in Brazil and Uruguay – both countries have a rich football heritage – in the 1930s and 1940s as a solution to the lack of available football pitches.
*
In Brazil, futsal is played by more people than soccer and several players, including Ronaldo, Fabregas, Zidane and Pele have progressed to careers as successful professional footballers.
*
Futsal – from the Portuguese futebol de salão (‘hall football’) – is played between two teams of five players with a smaller ball, with less bounce than a regular football, on a hard court surface with an emphasis on improvisation, creativity and technique, as well as ball control and passing in small spaces.
*
Signing up to the Futsal Scholarship also enables students to earn qualifications towards employment in the sport and leisure industry, alongside training and competing in a professional futsal environment for Albion.
*
Futsal is the only form of indoor football approved by FIFA, UEFA and the FA, and with over two million regular participants it is globally recognised as one of the fastest growing indoor sports in the world.
*
Futsal co-ordinator Hayley Funnell said; “I’m delighted we have confirmed a second year for the scholarship. The first 12 months were an unbridled success and we’re looking forward to progressing and developing the course.”First trial dates are Wednesday 3rd April, and for more information on the course and how to enrol, please email Hayley Funnell at hayley.funnell@albioninthecommunity.org.uk.
