Albion are remaining tight-lipped over reports linking Gus Poyet with Reading.
The Seagulls manager is believed to be top of the wanted list at the Madejski Stadium.
Reports this morning*suggested Poyet was considering a £2m switch to the Premier League club and had met owner Anton Zingarevich.
But Albion are confident of keeping hold of the inspirational Uruguayan boss, who has taken them into the heart of the Championship play-off race and he would certainly find it a wrench to leave.
It Poyet did decide to move it would be a shock.
Brighton are challenging strongly for the play-offs and Reading are struggling to avoid relegation from the Premier League.
Reading could turn to Nigel Adkins, who was demoted by Southampton recently, if they are unable to secure Poyet as replacement for Brian McDermott, who was sacked by the Premier League strugglers recently.
Albion have issued a “no comment” reply to the suggestion they have given Reading permission to talk to their manager.
Neither club were willing to confirm whether there had been contact between the Royals and representatives of Poyet, who is now out of the country.
Seagulls fans were put on red alert when the odds on their manager taking charge at the Madejski Stadium suddenly plunged to 1/10 with one leading bookmaker yesterday.
Those prices were easing to 1/4 last night.
Although Poyet has made no secret of his Premier League ambitions, he is confident he can get there with Albion.
He is currently under contract until 2016 and the club would be determined to keep hold of their manager.
Albion chief executive Paul Barber has underlined the strength of the club’s relationship with Poyet.
Speaking when Poyet’s name was first mentioned as a possible successor to McDermott last week, Barber told The Argus he was ready for speculation.
He said: “Gus is our manager. He is doing a great job, he is under a good contract and we are delighted to have him here so long may it continue.
“It is inevitable when you have got a top manager, a popular manager, someone who has got a huge amount of respect in the game, whenever there is a vacancy at a club at the next level it is inevitable that there are going to be links.
“It is something we are used to, it is something Gus is used to.
“We have a great relationship between Gus, myself the chairman.
“We speak openly about these things and there is no issue whatsoever.
“We are always prepared for the unexpected as well as the expected.”
