Albion will not move back into the Championship play-off positions even if they beat arch rivals Crystal Palace at The Amex tomorrow.
Nottingham Forest, who began the day a point and a place above the Seagulls, continued their excellent run with a 2-1 victory away to second-placed Hull City.
However, other results were favourable for Gus Poyet’s side ahead of their Sunday showdown with fourth-placed Palace.
Leicester City remain only three points above them but with a significantly superior goal difference after losing 2-1 at Derby in the late kick-off.
There were also defeats for the three teams immediately behind Albion – Bolton, Middlesbrough and Leeds United.
Nottingham Forest made it six wins on the trot as they came from behind to beat Hull. The hosts led thanks to George Boyd’s strike just before half-time but former Albion loanee Darius Henderson levelled ten minutes into the second half and substitute Lewis McGugan fired an 84th minute winner.
Derby ground out a victory against Leicester who, trailing 2-0, reduced the deficit in the second half through substitute Jeffrey Schlupp but could not force an equaliser.
Bolton’s run of five successive wins came to an end as they went down to a late goal at Ipswich Town. Carlos Edwards grabbed the winner in the 88th minute.
There was also a late winner at Middlesbrough as Nikola Zigic struck nine minutes from time to hand Birmingham a 1-0 victory which moved them up to 11th. Boro have now won just two of their last 13 league games.
In an early kick-off, tenth-placed Leeds United failed to make up ground on Albion after losing 2-1 at home to Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield. James Vaughan grabbed an 86th-minute winner for the visitors.
Leaders Cardiff City triumphed 2-0 at Sheffield Wednesday with goals from Don Cowie and Matthew Connolly.
Third-placed Watford failed to take advantage of Hull’s slip-up as they lost 1-0 at Barnsley to a first-half Bobby Hassell header.
Elsewhere, Sylvan Ebanks-Blake and Kevin Doyle got the goals as Wolves came from behind to beat Bristol City 2-1 in the battle of the bottom two.
Crystal Palace loanee Jermaine Easter scored on his debut as Millwall won 2-0 at Charlton.
Peterborough remain in the bottom three despite a 1-0 win at Blackpool thanks to Kane Ferdinand’s 45th-minute strike.
