As has been expressed here before, the second spell wasn't that bad, given what we now know about the Albion's financial circumstances. Mullery had to release many senior players, get in lots of freebies who had known better days and didn't have much money to spend (I think he only bought John Keeley who proved a bargain). Yet Albion were still about 8 points clear of relegation by the time he was sacked in January 1987, a remarkable achievement. It was an achievement that should have been clearer given Barry Lloyd's record during the rest of the season, where he went three months to win his first League match.
