A group of AITC students were given a valuable insight into the fitness regimes of the modern footballer when Inigo Calderon dropped in on one of their classes at Southwick Leisure Centre last week.
The defender, who has been shortlisted for the Football League’s Community Player of the Year award, spent over an hour and a half with the students answering questions on issues covering training techniques, diet and the role of psychology in football.
The question and answer session was part of AITC’s Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing course, which gives successful students a nationally accredited qualification and provides a pathway into employment in the fitness industry.
Calderon, who has a degree in sports psychology told seagulls.co.uk, “It was good for the students to understand how the things they are learning apply to a professional footballer. It is important to understand all of the theory but equally you need to understand how that theory applies in a practical situation and I hope I was able to give them a small insight into that."
The course, run by AITC’s Adult Education department, includes modules on fitness strategies, nutrition and client relationship skills, all aimed at equipping students for potential gym instructors or personal fitness instructor roles.
Craig Wigley from Lewes, who secured a place on the course through AITC’s Want to Work programme added, “We covered lots of topics and it is clearly an area he [Calderon] knows a huge amount about. His views on needing to complement advances in sports science with techniques in sports psychology were particularly interesting and it is great that we get the opportunity to do something like this as part of the course.”
AITC are currently recruiting for students for next year’s Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instruction course. An induction event will be held at the Amex Stadium (East Stand) on Tuesday 26th March between 10am-12pm.
