Got a lot of time for Brian McDermott and when Gus finally gets the job he craves, then I would not be disappointed to see him here. He is a brave and adventurous manager and given the tools can do a good job.
Reading came from nowhere last season to storm the division. They rode their luck and found that some senior pro's suddenly found the form of their lives, including Jason Roberts and Ian Harte. Roberts has barely played this season and is now finished and Harte has found the step up too much.
In essence Reading aren't good enough but BM has still done a good job and Reading have far more money in the bank than they would have had if he hadn't got them up. He hasn't had a bottomless kitty and so a number of his signings have had to come from outside the Prem. He has also had player issues e.g Danny Guthrie which haven't helped.
IMHO they are better off keeping him. With him, they will have a decent chance of regaining Prem status.

Ridiculous timing, even the special one doesn't have a much better chance of saving them this late on

Agree. One assumes the new man is ready to go but I can't see how it's going to improve their chances. I thought McDermott had done a good job there, hadn't spent much but what he had seemed pretty shrewd and always felt like there was a good spirit there

Can't imagine who they'll go for

Unfortunate for Mcdermott.

Reading have taken the shit or bust approach. Sometimes sacking a manager at this stage of the season pays off when in a relegation battle, providing the replacement is a fire-fighter type of manager - like Slade for us a few years back.

Slade had longer to sort out the situation. Surely Reading should look at the Wolves situation from last season and realise that the timing is lousy.

True enough, but Wolves hardly brought someone in who would completely freshen things up and change the mood at the club, they just promoted Connor!

I'm not defending Reading's decision here, just playing devil's advocate.

They tried to get various managers who all turned it down and had to settle for Connor.

Strange decision. The man got them promoted and has had hardly any money to spend. What do they expect?.

They are going down. Which prospective manager would want that on his CV?
