Anyone got an opinion on Hugo Chavez? As a Socialist, I mourn his passing - but concede he mightn't have been totally 'squeaky clean'!

In London village.
Democratically elected 4 times, survived an US sponsored military coup against his government, significantly improved the lot of ordinary people - I would say that was firmly to his credit.

And he called Bush a Donkey. I liked the fact he was not a U.S. lackey, well he wouldn't be would he if they were trying to kill him.

Yet another nod to the next Bugle podcast, this weekend.

John and Andy are big fans of Chavez's oeuvre, it'll be a quality retrospective.

I'm surprised he is so popular in this thread. He supported Argentina's claim for the Falklands.

I wish our leaders would follow his lead and present a tv programme like "Hello President" on Sunday mornings.

It could last anything from 4 to 6 hours. I'm thinking more about the Queen than Dave. Hello Queen where she would interview the Prime Minister or even Will Young if his busy schedule permits.

Spent oil money improving the health and education of the people. Won 4 elections and a number of referendums.
Other leaders would have spent the money on arms and enforcing a police state, signed away many of the countries resources and syphoned plenty away for themselves - in other words done what America likes in a south American leader.
Genuinely believe the man entered politics to do good, not to do well. I doubt we have a single politician worthy of even licking the sweat from his taint.
