A word about NSC and ads and stuff

You may have noticed that NSC has been ad-less for the last week or so, as Google have stopped them due to some of the content present on NSC.

It's become clear that with nearly 10 years worth of loosely moderated posts on here, there is little chance of being able to retrospectively 'treat' all the dodgy threads to obtain sufficient confidence that Google will not find something else that infringes their rules.

And, for those that don't know, Google ad banners - specifically the one to the top right of every page - effectively fund NSC, supplying the income to pay for a hosting bill which comes in at £500-600 per month, as well as enabling NSC to make charitable donations from time to time.

I've come to the decision that the only practical way of dealing with this problem is to move EVERY thread to our 'other stuff' forum where we have no ad banners. This will effectively become an archive of posts from 1993 through to today. It will, however, still be possible to post to these threads - they'll remain fully active.

If you see a thread which should be returned to the Big Board then please use the report post feature, and a moderator will move it back across.

I will be exploring a few other potential revenue streams to see if NSC is able to get to a point where the loss of Google ad revenue would not be as critical as it is today, but for now NSC is very much reliant on the revenue that Google provides.

I'll be doing this later today.

Can this thread remain on the Big Board please

NSC Championship Prediction League 2012/13

Let Bozza do his bit first THEN report the thread in question and that way we ALL see it and one of us will respond to it in due course, there are bound to be quite a few threads people will want recalling, but I suggest you pre scan the thread in question to ensure it contains no non acceptable content for Google ads.

I am off work at the moment, awaiting a major operation, so I expect i will have a fair bit of time to be involved and quite active on this situation for a fair while to come.

Google have become more lax. They used to stop allowing adverts if there was bad content ANYWHERE on the same site.

Can we have a definition of what exactly is good or bad content? Is it just pictures or are we not allowed to swear/talk about certain subjects etc?

Yeah Bozza I was going to ask a similar thing: are you 100% certain that simply having dodgy stuff on another forum is sufficient? It's not even as if that forum is 'members only', it's all part of the same open messageboard, the same open site, and it's only a couple of clicks away. Have they told you where the dodgy stuff is? Or did you just get the standard email about 'content breaching our guidelines'. The content on that forum is still being indexed and is still searchable in Google - not sure if that's what's pissed them off.

Can I ask for this too? I know it's not simple and a degree of judgement will need to be used, but I'm not sure what's OK and what isn't any more. Some guidelines would be helpful

Will the re-organisation result in an "away end" ?

I'd like to second this. I think there's a fair few people who don't know if what they are saying is appropriate or not. Obviously it's clear sometimes, but have google give any steer as to what they are particularly offended by? I think many people on here would do their best to avoid it if they knew.

Yes, this. Will there now be a blanket ban on all swearing for instance?

The Google Adsense content guidelines are as follows...

Pornography, adult or mature content
Violent content
Content related to racial intolerance or advocacy against any individual, group or organisation
Excessive profanity
Hacking/cracking content
Gambling or casino-related content
Illicit drugs and drug paraphernalia content
Sales of beer or spirits
Sales of tobacco or tobacco-related products
Sales of prescription drugs
Sales of weapons or ammunition (e.g. firearms, firearm components, fighting knives, stun guns)
Sales of products that are replicas or imitations of designer or other goods
Sales or distribution of coursework or student essays
Content regarding programmes which compensate users for clicking ads or offers, performing searches, surfing websites or reading emails
Any other content that is illegal, promotes illegal activity or infringes on the legal rights of others

However, every time we have been warned it has been due to sex/adult content. Examples below - all threads were on the Big Board at the time the warning was issued. As you can see there is a significant time lapse between the original posts and the resultant warnings, which is why I think we are best to move everything off the ad-supported forum and almost start again.

5th March 2013 - Gangbangin'

14th Feb 2013 - Upyachka vs Medved

30th Nov 2012 - NSFW: How Many Different Ways Can NSC Draw Boobies Using Keyboard Characters - Page 2

31st Oct 2012 - YouPorn

18th Oct 2012 - Let's masturbate,

19th Sep 2012 - Swingers

Can I just ask why you cannot promote gambling websites etc? im sure the pirate bay and similar websites are not supported by google but rake it in. Also lets face it with the sort of demographic you have gambling etc may result in a fair few clickthroughs?

Those are the Adsense rules, as simple as that.

What I can say is we have never been warned for gambling content and in the States there is a definite softening on gambling going on right now, so maybe it's not seen as a priority area for Google.

What I meant was is there not an alternative to google adsense? The pirate bay is full of gambling and porn adverts, surely they are not coming from google adsense?

Probably not, no.

But that's the slightly bizarre thing about the way Adsense works - gambling content is not permitted, but gambling ads may be presented by Adsense on our pages. Indeed my Adsense control panel says that 6% of the ads presented on NSC are gambling ones.

Thats the thing when your as big as they are though. Its do as they say, not what as they do.
Is there no way of appeal or anything, then again im sure its almost impossible to get through to a human. If it helps I know a fair few people with businesses and if you went down the route of letting them advertise on here then I would be able to get you a few takers.

Hope NSC Poker nights on Sundays are not seen as 'gambling content'? Anything we as regular users can do (other than follow those rules) just let us know :)
