A surreal finale saw Albion Youth fall to a frustrating and controversial 1-0 defeat against Brentford.Simon Rusk’s side has two penalty claims turned down in the dying moments for fouls on Elliot Levy; the second seeing the linesman flag for the spot-kick, only for the referee to bring the game to an end - much to the annoyance of the home side.
Albion created numerous chances, striking the woodwork twice, but were undone by a breakaway goal in the 55th minute.
Rusk’s outfit came into the game off of back-to-back victories over Barnet and came closest to opening the scoring when Dylan Lall hit the bar in the first half.
However Brentford capitalised on some sloppy play in the middle of the park to counter attack just after the half-time break, and despite some valiant defending to block the initial effort on goal, Albion fell behind.
The Seagulls fought back and with Jacob Peake forcing the visitor’s keeper into a fine one handed save low to his left, Lall hit the woodwork again; striking the post with a close-range header.
But it was in stoppage time when the main story unfolded, with Levy and the referee playing the starring roles.
First, Levy broke into the box down the right before seemingly being tripped just inside the area, but the officials were unmoved.
Further controversy was to unfold though, as Levy chested the ball down in the box before once again going down under a clumsy challenge. This time the lineman was convinced of the foul and began waving his flag for the infringement, only for the man in the middle to ignore his assistant’s advice and blow the final whistle.
Albion (4-3-3): Walton; Barry, Benham, Lall, Gray; Asmundssen (Harris 70), Triallist, Peake, Muitt, Rowhurst (70), Deen. Subs not used: Colquhoun, Courtney.
