Charlie Oatway heralded Albion’s 2-0 victory over leaders Cardiff City, but has urged the side to back it up with maximum points during their next two home games.
The Seagulls handed the Bluebirds only their second home defeat of the season, to take the side within two points of the play-offs, and they now face Amex fixtures against Burnley and Huddersfield.
Oatway told seagulls.co.uk, “It’s a massive win for us! It always is if you come to Cardiff and get a result after the way then have been playing this season, and it takes us that bit closer to the play-off pack.
“Anyone who comes to Cardiff has got to soak up periods of the game because they are a fantastic side, with a very good squad. We knew that when we had the ball we would have to keep it and make it as difficult as possible for them. We did that.
“We have got to be consistent now because we are in the run-in. We’re running out of games and time so we need to make sure that we get points regardless of who we are up against.
“We have two home games now and we need to set our stall out and try to get the six points.”
Gus Poyet has regularly talked about being strong in both boxes and Oatway felt that tonight typified that ethos with Leonardo Ulloa scoring his first league goal for Albion and Tomasz Kuszczak making a string of stunning saves.
“Leo gives us an extra string to our bow. He puts in so much work and he has such a good touch for a big guy so he caused their centre-backs problems all night.
“He deserved his first league goal for the shift that he has put in every single day that he has been here. He went through a battering at times and he gave as good as he got.
“Tomasz did very well at the other end too. He’s one of the best goalkeepers outside of the Premier League in my opinion so it doesn’t surprise me when I see some of the saves that he makes - he does it on such a regular basis.
“He would say that he’s paid to do that, like he’d say that the strikers are paid to put the ball in the back of the net, but he was my Man of the Match tonight.”
Meanwhile, Liam Bridcutt will serve a two-match suspension after receiving his tenth yellow card of the season while Dean Hammond limped off injured, but Oatway confirmed that Craig Mackail-Smith was left out on precautionary measures.
“Craig has a niggle which we didn’t want to push with a long journey. He would stiffen up on the way home so the medical staff took the decision out of his hands to make sure he gets an extra couple of days rest.
“We knew it would only be a matter of time until Liam got suspended. It’s a shame that two of our more holding midfielders could be out at the same time but we are hoping that Deano will be okay. We will do some checks during the week.
“But we will have Ashley Barnes back and possibly Gordon Greer so that’s what a squad is about. The gaffer can’t speak because he’s ill but he is always saying that the squad is what’s important to a club.”
