Albion’s American Express Community Stadium will host England’s Under-21s side for the first time on Monday 25th March, when Stuart Pearce’s record-breaking side take on Austria – their Euro 2013 send-off match.
Fans have the chance to see England’s up and coming stars like Liverpool trio Jordan Henderson, Raheem Sterling and Jonjo Shelvey, Blackpool’s exciting winger Tom Ince and Team GB goalkeepers Jack Butland and Jason Steele, for as little as £5.
And the young lions are in flying form at the minute after their recent 4-0 victory over Sweden extended their winning streak to seven games – a record at Under-21 level.
As they prepare for their final fixture on home soil before heading to the European Championships in Israel, Pearce’s boys are determined to keep their impressive run going, which has also seen them keep seven clean sheets.
Pearce said, “We’ll certainly be turning up at Brighton with a really strong side. By that stage I hope to have in my mind somewhere near to the squad we’ll be looking to take to the European Championship in June.
“It will be worth people coming down to see some really promising players and, hopefully, a really good game.”
The Amex has already hosted an England Under-19s international against Denmark just four months after opening in 2011, and a crowd of close to 17,000 saw England edge the friendly 1-0 with West Ham United’s Robert Hall scoring a late winner.
The game will be the fifth meeting between the two nations’ Under-21 teams. The previous encounters have all been UEFA Championship qualifiers.
England won 3-1 in Kapfenberg in 1994, Jamie Redknapp notching a hat-trick, and then completed the double with a 2-0 success at Middlesbrough a year later. Peter Taylor’s side won 2-0 in Krems in 2004 but lost the return 2-1 at Leeds after Carlton Cole had given them the lead to delight a 28,000 crowd.
Pearce continued, “The infrastructure at Brighton, which they’ve built up over the last few years, is fantastic.
“Gus Poyet is a great manager and the team are playing some good football. It’s a first rate stadium and everything is there for Brighton to go on to big things.
“We are delighted to be going there with the Under-21s. We’ve been down to the south coast before at Southampton and they always sell-out for us so we are looking forward to something similar again.*
“It’s a big game, being our last one at home before we go to Israel, so it would be great to have a big support there to get behind our young and exciting team.”
