Paralympic judo medallist, Ben Quilter and Albion boss Gus Poyet were among a host of Sussex sports stars and local dignitaries gathered to celebrate the second year of a major community programme run by Albion in the Community and American Express.
The Albion in the Community and American Express Awards evening, supported by Solutions Inc, was held at the American Express Community Stadium and recognised the outstanding contributions of over 700 volunteers and the special achievements of seven award winners.
The prestigious Awards were also attended by Caroline Lucas MP and Albion stars Inigo Calderon and Craig Mackail-Smith.
The joint community-focused programme aims to improve opportunities for young people and adults in the areas of education, health, disability and sports participation, the award categories reflect the various initiatives delivered in the first two years of the AITC and American Express partnership, which collectively fall under the ‘Realise the Potential of the Community’ banner.
Activities in 2012 included: business skills master classes for local schools and students; healthy living sessions for seven to nine-year-old school pupils, fun days out for young disabled people and football coaching. In total, the initiatives have directly benefitted over four thousand local people across Sussex over the last two years.

Dick Knight, chairman of Albion in the Community commented, “The collaboration of American Express’s commitment and volunteering resources with Albion in the Community’s community experience has been a game-changer in terms of improving people’s lives through the power of sport.”

The third year of the AITC and American Express community scheme is set to get under way in the coming weeks and will include an initiative with American Express volunteers working with local social enterprises.
