Albion suffered misery at The Amex as two Matej Vydra goals boosted Watford’s growing hopes of promotion.
The Czech striker scored twice in a spell of three second-half minutes as the Hornets enjoyed a televised 3-1 win.
David had earlier fired home a penalty to cancel out Troy Deeney’s opener with all the goals coming after the interval.
Gianfranco Zola’s men always looked solid in defence and inventive going forward but had a touch of fortune with the goal which restored their lead on 68 minutes.
Vydra was allowed room to let fly from outside the box and his effort deflected off Adam El-Abd to loop gently over Tomasz Kuszczak.
Two minutes later a stunning counter attack led to Deeney releasing Vydra to outpace El-Abd and calmly finish the one-on-one.
Watford could have led at the break but Kuszczak produced a fine fingertip save from Vydra in added time.
Manuel Almunia had earlier pushed away a ferocious Kazenga LuaLua drive.
There were bad first-half misses by Daniel Pudil and Andrew Crofts at either end.
Deeney made the breakthrough with an angled drive in the 54th minute.
David levelled on 65 minutes with a penalty fired high past Almunia after LuaLua’s chasing had forced a rare defensive error.
The winger was brought down by Tommie Hoban just inside the box.
