David Lopez celebrates after converting an 88th-minute penalty against Millwall
David Lopez revealed few nerves as he stepped up to salvage a point for Albion at home to Millwall.
The 30-year-old converted a penalty two minutes from time as the Seagulls fought back from two goals down to draw 2-2.
It was only David’s fourth start since arriving from Athletico Bilbao in September and his first goal in English football.
He said: “We decided I was going to take the penalty if I was on the pitch. When the penalty was awarded there was never any doubt.
“I didn’t feel any pressure. I knew it was the last few minutes and we had to score but I was confident in myself that it was going to go in.”
It was an eventful evening for David who began in midfield but switched to right-back in a first half reshuffle.
However, he emerged with his best performance for the Seagulls and hopes now to cement a place in the team.
He added: “I was a lot more involved than I have been in other games. I had a lot of touches of the ball and I was involved in key incidents in the game.
“There was the free-kick, the penalty and I felt comfortable linking up with my team-mates. I am happy with my performance.
“I am working every day to be in the team match after match. This was a good opportunity for me and I think I have taken it. I hope to stay in the team.”
