For younger readers: Charlton were in financial difficulty in the 1980s and had to leave their home ground in the summer of 1985. They hosted matches at Selhurst Park and, for a season and a bit, across the river at Upton Park, while supporters campaigned long and hard to get them back home. They played their first match back here on December 5, 1992, although, apart from the away end, the stadium did not look much like it does today. Charlton beat Portsmouth 1-0 that day with Colin Walsh scoring in the seventh minute. Home fans will mark that goal with applause at 3.07pm this afternoon.

A week on from defeat at Crystal Palace, the Seagulls come just a little further north east to play the Addicks as they celebrate the 20th anniversary of their return to The Valley.
