The Seagulls had to play over 80 minutes against Crystal Palace with ten men after Lewis Dunk was shown a red card, and had two penalties awarded against them, but the Albion boss felt the chances were there to salvage something.
He told seagulls.co.uk, “We came into the game in a good run, with plenty of confidence and the team was organised, but after five minutes everything had changed for many reasons.
“The main one was the sending off, and we have no complaints about that, but we were already struggling with defenders today. The one player we didn’t want to lose was a defender and that’s what happened. That was the story of the game.
“The goal before half-time came at a bad time for us, but they did not have a clear chance. We had the best chance of the game at the start of the second half and if we scored that it’s 1-1, then it’s a different game. We put ourselves on the back foot all of the time and there are no complaints.
“The fans probably know that the team tried everything. Unfortunately if we scored we might be talking about something different. The key moments went against us so I didn’t enjoy this derby day.”
Poyet also explained the injury situation in defence and called for players to stand up ahead of next Saturday’s trip to Charlton Athletic.
“Marcos Painter suffered a small tear in his calf during the week and we expect him to be out for two to three weeks, but you can never be sure nowadays.
“Wayne Bridge and Adam El-Abd were not ready so I could not play them today, then when we needed a little help from Orlandi he had to go off injured. We think he has broken his rib.
“Wayne has the best chance of being ready for Saturday so we need to hope that the medical staff can produce something special this week.
“Unfortunately it’s mainly the defenders who are injured and we need people to stand up now. We have a week to go until the next game and we need to relax and be ready.”
Meanwhile, Poyet admitted that it’s never nice to see former players scoring against his side but wishes two-goal Glenn Murray well.
“I have no problem with Glenn scoring. We wish everyone well who helped Brighton get to where we are at the moment.
“We know he’s dangerous in the air and we know that he goes down in the box. We don’t want any player to score against us but we always wish Glenn the best.”
