It was with great sadness that the club learnt of the passing of Dave Sexton OBE on Sunday afternoon...
Dave was a seasoned Second Division performer when Billy Lane brought him to the Albion from Leyton Orient in October 1957, and he played a big part in the club’s Third Division promotion victory that season, scoring an impressive 18 goals in 26 League games.
Injury ruled him out of the climax to the campaign and he was transferred to Crystal Palace in May 1959, having played 53 games for the club, scoring a total of 28 goals.
Forced to retire within three years due to a knee injury, aged just 31, Sexton then carved out a successful management career, leading Chelsea to FA Cup success in 1970 and the European Cup Winners’ Cup a year later.
In 1974-75 he took QPR to within a point of the First Division championship before taking the managerial reins at Manchester United in 1977. He ended his club career at Coventry City in the early Eighties.
Sexton also had a very successful period as coach of the England under-21 side, winning the UEFA U21 Championship in 1982 and 1984.
He was awarded an OBE for services to football in 2005.
