ALBION saved themselves from a goalkeeping crisis – by refusing to let Peter Brezovan out on loan.
Clubs were interested in borrowing the giant Slovak before he jumped from third to first choice in Albion’s 2-1 victory at Huddersfield.
Brezovan was promoted to the bench for the trip to Yorkshire after Casper Ankergren hurt a thumb in training. He ended up between the posts at short notice when regular No. 1 Tomasz Kuszczak pulled out during the warm-up with a finger infection sustained on international duty with Poland last week.
Boss Gus Poyet revealed to The Argus: “I am not going to say the teams but there were three or four interested in Peter.
“But, with that scary situation where you cannot recall him and we have got only two goalkeepers, we were not willing to let him go. Now it’s simple, he is going nowhere!”
Other fringe players could leave on loan before Thursday’s deadline. Championship rivals Barnsley have showed interest in midfielder Ryan Harley and striker Will Hoskins, although the latter is back in the first team picture and came on at Huddersfield in the second half.
Scunthorpe have already failed with a cut-price loan bid to take Matt Sparrow back to Glanford Park. Poyet said: “There are going to be some calls and some movement. It will depend on the players as well and what they want to do because we try to respect their careers.”
