Gus Poyet felt that his side’s 2-1 win at Huddersfield was a just reward for their attitude...
The Seagulls have been left frustrated in recent weeks but a Will Buckley brace capped an impressive performance at the John Smith’s Stadium, taking Albion’s unbeaten run to five games.
Poyet told seagulls.co.uk, “The win was something that we needed and it shows how one win can change the way that people talk about a football team.
“Until today we had one win in nine games and now people will say that we are unbeaten in five games. That is what happens off the back of winning games.
“For me, the best thing about the game was the attitude, the concentration and the belief of the squad. It takes a lot for a team to come here and keep playing after all of the frustration that we have had.
“Even when we were 2-0 up it was always going to be difficult still, because they were not going to give the win to us, but we were strong and kept playing. We expected nothing less from a Simon Grayson team, but we needed to battle and we did that.”
The Albion boss handed first starts of the season to Peter Brezovan and Marcos Painter after Tomasz Kuszczak dropped out late and Wayne Bridge did not recover from a calf injury in time, but he was proud of the players’ performances.
“It wasn’t an easy day. For the first time we were missing Wayne Bridge, and most people were looking at it being the first time this season that Marcos Painter has played but he was very good. He was getting a little bit of cramp towards the end so we had to change him.
“Peter had not been in the squad and we had to start with him because Casper (Ankergren) got injured on Thursday then Tomasz couldn’t play today.
“Our third goalkeeper had to jump in and he helped us out. He was very disappointed because of the goal and he’s feeling so sad, but if you’re going to make a mistake you want to do it when you win.
“Tomasz has got an infection in one of his fingers. We thought that it would have settled down in time for today but it didn’t. We needed to change but I was very calm with the players we had on the pitch.
“As a manager I want to see the whole squad involved and they all performed today.”
