Albion’s winless streak in the Professional Development League extended to three games after they were held to a goalless draw by Charlton Athletic at The Valley.
The Addicks had their goalkeeper David Button to thank in the first half after a string of fine saves and it was the Albion who continued to do the majority of pressing in the second half but were unable to find that all important goal. In the end a draw was arguably the fairest result after a catalogue of chances were missed by the hosts in the closing moments.A strong squad including, Kazenga LuaLuua, Matt Sparrow, Lewis Dunk, Torbjorn Agdestein and Inigo Calderon travelled to London and the performance was far more typical of Luke Williams’ side after last week’s
disappointing defeat* at home to Brentford -as they controlled possession for long spells.
*
Former Albion player Nathan Jones is the coach of Charlton’s Under-21s and his side were backed by a boisterous section of home fans but it was the visitors who nearly went ahead after just two minutes.
*
The lively Solly March’s shot seemed destined for the back of the net only for Bradley Jordan to make a timely block and deflect the ball behind for a corner.
*
Charlton then came close through Harry Osbourne but his header from close range looped over the bar.
*
A short corner produced the first fine save out of Button, when Agdestein’s pull back from the by-line was met by Barker. His blocked shot landed at the feet of Calderon whose powerful strike was magnificently stopped.
*
Button then produced a brilliant double save to keep the game level. LuaLua’s 25-yard strike took the slightest of deflections which seemingly had the ball heading past the keeper, but the former Tottenham goalie managed to claw the ball away and then miraculously picked himself up to deny Agdestein’s follow up.
*
Jordan Cook then dragged a chance safely wide after 35 minutes as the first half petered out. A feisty start to the second half saw neither side backing away from some hefty but fair challenges.
*
Albion spent the opening 15 minutes probing at Charlton’s defence but were unable to create any real openings and had Ben Sampayo to thank for a brilliant last-ditch tackle to prevent substitute, Adebayo Azeez, from ending up through on goal.
*
Neither side were able to find a way past the opposition's defence but in the last 10 minutes both sides came close to stealing the win. Charlton’s Michael Smith was inches away from nodding home at the back post before Jordan forced Dan East into a relatively comfortable save.
The game ended at a frantic pace with March flashing a shot wide in the 89th minute before Callum Harriot crashed a long-range strike off the post in injury time.
Albion: (4-3-3) East (GK); Sampayo, McGiveron, Calderon, Dunk; Sparrow, March, Oatway; LuaLua (Goodwin 64), Barker, Agdestein (Rodgers 64). Subs Not Used: Smith (GK), Akubuine, Jones
