Will Hoskins marked his return from injury with a late goal but it wasn't enough to stop Albion's development squad losing their first home game of the season.
An energetic Brentford side put in a blistering first-half display and did not allow Luke Williams’ side to impose their passing style on the game.It was in the opening half where the damage was done and the in-form Bees carved out two opportunities within the first ten minutes. Firstly, centre-back Aaron Pierre saw a header comfortably gathered by Albion keeper Dan East, before Antonio German missed a glorious chance when he headed wide from six yards.
The visitors did not have to wait long though to open their account and it was former Albion development squad player Leon Redwood who tapped in Josh Clarke’s pull back after 11 minutes.
George Barker had a half chance in a rare opening for Albion but his half volley never threatened Antoine Gounet who gathered easily.
Just eight minutes after the opener, Charlie Adam latched on to a loose ball in the Brighton area to powerfully side foot past East to double Brentford’s advantage.
The impressive work-rate displayed by the Bees continued throughout the half with Jake Reeves and German both going close to a third goal with strikes from distance.
Albion started to show improvements with the returning Hoskins firing wide, before Gounet tipped Charlie Oatway’s chipped cross over bar.
Williams brought Anton Rodgers on at the break to add some guile to the midfield with Romain Vincelot dropping back into defence, and within five minutes of the re-start Hoskins almost pulled a goal back, only to see Gounet make a fine low save down to his right.
Oatway then had to be alert as he cleared the ball off the line as Brentford nearly bundled home from a corner.
Brighton were much improved and the game was far more even although it was Brentford who came closest to scoring next when Pierre’s header clipped the outside of the post.
Solly March forced another good save out of Gounet before turning provider for Hoskins who showed his experience by placing the ball past the Bess keeper.
Top scorer Barker came closest to equalising when he cut in from the left and fizzed a right footed strike just wide.
Williams’ team continued to push but despite an ambitious volley from Rodgers in the dying embers of the game, Albion could not muster an equaliser as Brentford achieved their fourth win in a row.
