On Monday evening we will have what is our biggest ‘match’ of the season so far, when Martin Perry takes his team of planning experts to Adur District Council and we will learn whether our plans for our new £29m training ground and academy get the go-ahead.

Maybe not for the fans, but for everyone at the club this decision (which we hope will be a positive one after council officers approved the plans at the end of last week) is just as important as getting permission to build the Amex. It is absolutely vital for our long-term future, as it will not only help us to continue to attract (and keep hold of) the calibre of players we are getting used to seeing in Albion shirts, but perhaps more importantly it will help us build and expand our youth development scheme.

Our existing set-up is spread all over Sussex, in Brighton for the first team, and Eastbourne, Worthing and Lancing for the academy and that isn’t ideal.

We are grateful to the University of Sussex for the provision of our existing facilities, but the new training ground would give us a top-class facility to rival any other club in the country, with an academy alongside it.

The building also has been designed to inspire young players to work their way from the youngest age group right through to the first team; working their way along the corridor of the academy changing areas and classrooms, on to the youth team and development squad areas and eventually into the first-team dressing room.

There are also superb medical facilities, a state-of-the-art gym and rest and relaxation areas for all age groups.

Additionally the new training ground will bring plenty of benefits to the local Lancing and Adur community. Access will not be restricted to elite players coming through the academy, local youngsters will also have the chance to take advantage of the site. Two pitches and classrooms will be made available for an estimated 30 hours’ community use every week; and the club have agreed to spend more than £1.4m improving sports facilities elsewhere in the Adur district, including the installation of a floodlit all- weather pitch.

The facility will create 300 full-time construction jobs, including up to 100 jobs for local residents; with 100 jobs at the site and indirectly in other businesses with up to half expected to be undertaken by Adur residents.

The planning committee meets at 7pm on Monday evening at the Adur Civic Centre, Ham Road, Shoreham, West Sussex, BN43 6PR. If you are an Adur resident and wish to come along to show your support to Martin and the team, please do so as it will be appreciated, but the public gallery is likely to be full so supporters wishing to attend should arrive early. Wear your colours, but please ensure you respect the views of all on the night.
