I got escorted out of work today

After 7 years in a company and being treated like dirt for the past year under a new manager I got a job with a rival company and handed in my notice on Monday. Today I was called into an office by a director and told that my services were no longer required and I was to go forthwith on 6 weeks "gardening leave" I was marched off company property.
So unsuspected and dramatic, this has never happened to me before and I felt weird and emotional.
What a day, anyone had this before or a weirder leaving/sacking at work?

still looking on the brightside, you have the job to go to..also paid for the 6 weeks gardening leave!!
if "they" knew you were going to a competitor its fair enough to let you go early but im sure its hard after 7 years..

Yeah same as, been there 6 years, had a ruck with the boss on the Monday, Friday they marched me out of the door. Bunch of no good cnuts

Dont most companies do this if you would be able to squirrel away clients to your new company. Can hardly blame them but escort is a bit heavy handed.

I had a kind of different thing whereby I walked off the premises, on the spot, when they tried to shaft me. Didn't get a real goodbye to the office and felt a little embarrassed by it all. So on the flip side of the coin but same feeling. End of the day mate, you have your friends from that place as I do from mine.

the thing is with Gardening leave is that there will more than likely be a clause that prevents you from starting early with the new employer.

As for being escorted off of site, that is not unusual, normally to stop you stealing company secrets and passing them on to the competition. My contract of employment prohibits me working from any competitor of ours for up to 2 years after leaving full time employment with them. This is to stop our competitors stealing the talent from us.

Standard practice and seen it done loads of times where people escorted to reception to leave.

The main reason is the potential damage that could be done by anyone like sabotage to servers etc. I suspect they believed he may have taken client base away hence the reason.

If you were that intent of sabotaging the company or stealing clients or databases - surely you'd do this before you handed in your Notice though? I have heard of it done before - and seen it done once but it does seem a bit extreme to escort someone from the premises when in this day and age you could remotely access most information for months in advance from the comfort of your living room before you gave your Notice in at all!!!

I won't name the company, even though they treated me like poop yesterday. They used to do this kind of thing years ago but last few to leave have been allowed work out their notice. I'm happy that I've got a nice new job to go to and now time off, but gutted that I didn't get a proper chance to say goodbye to some good work mates. The director was almost apologetic that he had to do it. But saddest thing is that I wouldn't have left in the 1st place if it wasn't for my manager treating me and many other of my colleagues like dirt. This week alone, me and 2 others have handed in their notice and another 2 fellas suspended for fighting.

Same thing happened recently to a mate of mine, he handed in his notice after being head hunted by a rival company, offering a 40% increase in salary, and his own choice of company car.
It had even written into his old contract that he would be instantly dismissed, should he end up accepting an offer from the rival company. So he was expecting to be escorted off the premises.

What's interesting is that his old firm made no attempt to match the new offer.

Gardening leave is a kind of retainer in the hope his contacts go a bit cold. His old company hope clients adapt to the new bloke dealing with them. He should see if the new company will pay a golden parachute fee to start early if he can steal some or all the clients.
