NSC Official Poetry Competition: 'The Withdean Experience'

Cheshire Cat

The most curious thing..
The State of Innocence and the Fall of Man,
By John Dryden - 1674

Lucifer.
— But where dwells Man?

Uriel.
On yonder Mount; thou seest it fenc'd with Rocks,
And round th'ascent a Theatre of Trees,
A sylvane Scene, which rising by degrees,
Leads up the eye below, nor gluts the sight
With one full prospect, but invites by many,
To view at last the whole: there his abode,
Thither direct thy flight.

The Withdean experience is so s*it
Wet and cold, so sick of it
How I long for somewhere warmer
Along the road, maybe at Falmer
Singing in the Championship!

ALBION!

(sorry for dreadfull half rhymes, would have been too easy otherwise and bit merry)

The Withdean Experience, how best to convey?
To sit in the rain, twenty four quid we'd pay.

The PA was awful, the catering poor
Row S in block U had a hole in the floor.

The away fans complained that they barely could see
Don't know they were born - least their ponchos were free.

Watched a real mix of players - had hopes for them all,
But for each Paul McShane there was one Shane McFaul.

A fortress to start with, it went horribly wrong
T'was a home back in Brighton, but for ten years too long.

We had our good times there, though more often poor
At least 'til that day that Gus walked through the door.

So as we move onwards, I beg of you please
Raise your glasses my friends, to the Theatre of Trees.

OUTSTANDING.

Kicking back in an athletics track
Cheap plastic seats and a railway track
Stands constructed like Maccano
But it was the best place to go

The November breeze
Rushes through the Theatre of Trees
I’m cold and I’m wet
I just want a roof over my head

But it won’t be long until we’re out of here
We’ll have a new home next year

But in the sky, a seagull rises high
The crowd looks up and sees the sign
That we will reach new lofty heights
Like our mascot in flight

There’s very little now left to bear
We’ll have a new home next year

The Withdean is a little bit shit,
but does Falmer have its own Sandpit?
Withdean Stadium is one to forget,
But find another with its own shotput net!

We've had some good times at our Withdean,
Like the successive promotions, what marvelous scenes,
Yes we've had some good times,
But I won't miss it one bit,
Because in the end, it was all a bit shit!

You can probably tell i'm not much of a poet.

This should be in the final matchday program. Sums up Withdean perfectly.

hitlers mechanical bowel mouse
The rain would fall like hammer and nails, the wind would blow like a stacy or gail.
For ten long years we endured this scene, sat on plastic seats wet and green.
Managers came and managers went, the away fans in the distant all thought we were bent.
Poyet then came with his keep ball brand and the rev completed all seven stands.
The future is bright and falmer the proof its a shame they lied about the colour of the roof.
So lets march on to the promised land, head held high and pants in hand.

 Why thank you, for all the kind words.

Its nice to know that those 15 minutes were not entirely wasted.

And THPP - I was quite pleased with the McFaul couplet!

Good stuff!
Would you like that to be part of the creative writing display in the East Stand which the designers are proposing?

A bit more on this. I'm sure some of you remember the '....And I'll Be Kit Napier' book of supporters' poetry and prose which we produced about 8 years ago - it was really quality stuff. Well, the same kind of thing will be happening again soon - only instead of a book the results will be displayed in the East Stand. More info on a new thread soon.
