Soon after joining, war broke out and he served in the Royal Navy before returning to Hove, where he competed with Jack Ball for the goalkeeper's jersey over six seasons.

Harry reached his peak during the 1947-48 season, when he saved seven penalties out of nine, including an incredible run of five in succession.
