What if Brighton had the same hooligan problem as Millwall?

The thread which involved input from Hackney Man (Millwall Fan) provoked a thought for me.

What would it be like if the Albion had a nasty hooligan following like Millwall do.?

Would this affect the way in which you supported the team?

Would you seek to defend the fanbase with inferences of passion and commitment?

How would you seek to stop the problem?

Would you openly admit to being an Albion fan to the same levels you do now?

Would you follow another team?

Yes. There would be some games I'd most likely avoid.
No. Even if they were our c'nts, they'd still be c'nts.
Would hope the club itself would do a lot more than some existing clubs with such issues.

Well it wouldnt effect the games that i would go to. I think every club has some sort of hooligan's. I myself have never seen any sort of fighting at a ground when following Brighton. The problem is the hooligans but if its going to happen then it will and there is not alot that can be done about it if not found out.

So as long as it doesn't happen at the games that YOU go to, and so long as YOU don't see it, its not an issue.

I honestly think that I would find it quite difficult to follow a team with a large hooligan following. If that was the case for Brighton, I would probably follow Lewes.

Opposing fans thinking that you are up for a ruck by mere fact that you support Albion.

To answer your specific questions:

What would it be like if the Albion had a nasty hooligan following like Millwall do.?
It would make the atmosphere at home games more hostile, more difficult for opposition players and support. I wouldn't want to take my children to away matches (as I do now) through the increased chance of aggravation

Not really, except I wouldn't want my young children with me

No, I'd think (like I do now) that they were wankers and not a true reflection of how I support my team

How would you seek to stop the problem?
I'd hope that the club would ban such supporters. I doubt I could personally do anything.

Would you openly admit to being an Albion fan to the same levels you do now? Of course. I believe that the vast majority of all supporters (even Millwall's) are like me, that is passionate about my club without feeling the need to fight other teams supporters.

Would you follow another team? No way

It would certainly affect every aspect of the way i follow the club.
Firstly i'd be f***ing ashamed if the club was known more for hooligans than an image of being the club we are.
Secondly i'd be more subdued with my supporting as i wouldn't want to be tarred with the same brush as a bunch of neanderthals.
Thirdly i go to most away games with my missus, I wouldn't want her going if theres a chance we'll get targeted cos of a minority. Imagine how i'd explain to her parents if she ended up in hospital with a dart in her head or something.

Hooliganism is the most stupid thing in football. Its mindless violence & i find the appeal of it absolutley baffling. There's too much glamourisation of it nowadays too. I worry when my girlfriends 13 year old step brother finds the violence in rise of the foot soldier funny.

So, it wouldn't affect you if you ended up in hospital due to being punched, stabbed or hit with a bottle...just because of the football team you follow. I suspect that you weren't following the club from the late 70's to mid 80's, when we did have a sizeable hooligan element, who enjoyed getting it together with fans from our opponents. It meant being treated like a leper whenever you went to an away game, herded around by police as if a dangerous animal, and that went for all of our supporters not just those hell-bent on causing mayhem.

I am guessing that there is an element of irony in your post that has sadly passed me by, if not, maybe it is time to start growing up!

I was talking to a bloke I used to work with on Monday whos a Millwall season ticket holder and goes with his son and dad. He was telling me about their trip to Cardiff and said that it was great and that Cardiff have got it sorted right out down there. Theyd had to go by coach. They werent allowed to stop for a certain amount of miles before Bristol on the M4 (like they could stop at Membury but not Leigh Delaware or whatever), there and back. They were given an escort from the M4 straight through Cardiff to the ground. They were put straight in the ground. The number of tickets they were allocated was reduced. After the game they were kept in for half an hour and then put back on the coach and escorted straight out to the motorway. He said they didnt see any Cardiff anywhere on the streets. And he said this was a good trip!

That sounds crap to me and I told him that. He said you get used to it if youre Millwall. They have 7 or 8 away games like that a season. Bubble games they are called and you either have to do or the above or not go.

I wouldnt go.
