Update. Having whinged about missing selection for the England very old gits 10k team by 1 second, it appears I was wrong. They select on gun time and thus I have been selected ( Chester 10k, 2023).

My neighbour, M70, is hoping to qualify so asking on his behalf. Does this relate to your finishing position in a qualifying race? So the key is starting as close to the start line as possible so that you might finish before someone who might have a quicker chip time but started later?

I believe he said he'd already met the qualifying times across various distances, but needs to finish in the top X in a qualifying race.

Firstly he needs to be registered with England Athletics (through an affiliated club). If he is then an email came through on 21st June. TBH that contains just about all he needs to know. He must register for both the race(s) and with the England masters, the latter is free. There's also further explanation but unless I'm mistaken it isn't clear from this whether it's gun time or chip time that counts. I thought it was chip but it seems it's gun. However, it's something to chase up maybe. But when in doubt line up near the front. He'll also need to display his age category clearly but there's guidance on this. The other thing that he'll be up against is that he'll be competing against 65-69 year olds for a place in the top 3. I would advise he checks out the opposition via the Power of Ten website. The participant list of those who register with the masters is updated regularly. I wouldn't have bothered to have left home without knowing that the 2 fastest guys in the race weren't registered for the masters. And then theres always the hope that they register but don't turn up!
Hope this helps, but I was quite naive in some respects and very lucky to just scrape into the squad. There are 3 more qualifying events and I think they'll all be of a higher standard than the one I did.....
Cheers and good luck to him.

No Hove Prom or Lancing Parkrun tomorrow.
My currently overweight triathlon rival had race last weekend. 4 pints and 3 Tequillas led to an argument with a bloke in The Stanley Fishersgate about who was fastest. Ended up with a shirtless race down the middle of the road. Glad to say my rival didn't let the 60+ age group down cruising to a 100m victory. 🍺 🍻 🍺 🍸 🍸 🍸 warm up. Not sure about the cool down.

Makes the Ovett and Coe rivalry sound like small beer. Worthing PR is back on tomorrow.
Did the Highdown Hike on Wednesday. Nasty little run: rabbit holes, tree routes, uneven ground, difficult to overtake, hot and humid. Loved it. There's a very good You Tube running channel, Film My Run. It ranges from parkruns to ultras. The guy who produces is a Worthing Harrier. He's posted a film of the Highdown event under the title of Running from Killer Rabbits. It's only 6 minutes. I'm not in it, thankfully.

I was briefly in the Roundhill Romp video as it sets off from Steyning High Street. The WSFRL has some challenging courses. I'll look out for them next year.

Very big field of 500 in perfect conditions at Worthing today. 20.17 for me which is the fastest 5k I've ever run in my time on planet earth. And still only 2nd in my age category to John Orden (19.59). My age grade of 84.22% was, however, marginally better than JO's and 2nd only to Graham Godden. My first 2k was at 3.57 pace (too fast) and then I faded a bit. If Gaffer would be kind enough to update the table....

Amazing work GNT. I'm not aware of this Orden chap (might know him by sight), but GG is a bit of a machine! Do you reckon you've got a sub-20 in you?

Thanks, mate.Lopping another 18 seconds off a PB would be quite a stretch. It might take more than a new pair of Endorphins. I think the realistic target is to stay at the same pace but just get older! I genuinely never thought I could break the 80% barrier and last year only did it by running 5k along the seafront with a howling gale behind me.

Well, you need to get yourself in shape for WL, ready to bring the boys home to victory (maybe)!

Gaffer, thanks as ever for updating the table. Are you still on the sick bench? Any grounds for optimism?

Thanks for asking I'm in a very happy place. Mentally I've placed you in a box with JO not to be opened and concentrated on my own training. The hamstring stopped me seeing any dividends from that. I can currently run 4 miles uphill to the Dyke and return 4 miles down without trouble and run a 5k slow for me SB(sub 21.30). However, pushing the pace gives a twinge and 5 days off.
I'll continue to run close to that line to prepare for an Arena 3k at Withdean in 12 days. All or nothing.

Then September/October training in Croatia, Montenegro and Albania with camper. Then away end November/December to avoid witnessing the Qatar World Cup.

Might start for a sub 21 on the Prom on Saturday and see how it goes.

Need to checkout physios in Croatia, Montenegro and Albania before departure! If you can stand the heat then Hove prom could be a quick one on Saturday.....

Just had a little run out with 4 half mile intervals at 21" 5k pace. Quite easy and worked on a shorter stride that took stress off the hamstring. Heat OK as a pleasant breeze.
Workout a little too near Saturday but putting on the magic shoes for the first time in a while will bring home an SB on Saturday.
Probably hold a bit back from sub 21" due to the hamstring and to survive a wedding starting at 1pm in the i360 and finishing at midnight in a marquee in Hove Park.

Well done. Funny you mention the shorter steps approach to help the hammy. When I did mine I ran exclusively up steep hills prior to a comeback and it seemed to help. But mine went a few times when I went back on the flat for races, so caution is good.

Sitting back this morning on the Prom. Big wedding day ahead of me. Time to be sensible.

Nice and easy on the Prom. Sped up for the finish had a tussle with a teenager. Overtook him. He overtook me. Sat on his shoulder and took him again at 5:20 mile pace and ping hamstring pulled me up 20m from the finish.

Oh no, not the hammy. It's that pace that did it.
Bloody boiling at Worthing. 20.37, 20 seconds slower than last week. Age cat win.

Great year you're having. Will you enter a winter training programme for your England debut?

My all or nothing tactic has ended in nothing. The hamstring reacted badly after Saturday. Can't even swim. As you say fine all the way round, took the first kick in pace, took the second kick in pace and failed on the final kick. I'm pulling out of my final event of the summer, the Withdean 3K. Still happy with progress this year as 4 months ago thought I'd lost speed for ever.

I will now start running on the Downs for the winter (when hamstring ready) and build up more strength. X Country and hopefully a place in The Moyleman Marathon next March.

Hopefully you can make the Weakest Link in September this year.
