More great running over the weekend. I prepared for the tank tracks next Saturday by yesterday heading out over the downs and going down – and then up – the hill next to Beeding Hill on the SDW. Not sure what it's called, but it's rockier than Sylvester Stallone and I could only manage walking up it after 13 miles to Devil's Dyke and back.

A few more gentle ones during the week – I briefly contemplated the usual Monday morning Time Trial route this morning, but figured there was no point as I'd be destroyed half way around, so gently down the riverbank instead. Will probably get into the sea one morning, as Sussex Trail Events is now running a 1.5k or 3k swim event in September. Time to get practicing!

Is anyone contemplating 13 Hardway or the full marathon at the same time?

You can enter on the day so I’ll wait for a more accurate weather forecast.

Are you saying you're torn between which one to do on the day? I think you know what answer you'll get from *some* ORT posters... :rave:

The Hardway would be tough, I’m in nowhere near enough condition to run a road marathon let alone that *******.

Ah, I misunderstood you. To be fair, I'm not sure whether *I'M* in the right condition to run 'that *******', but I'm gonna do it anyway. The aid stations will keep me going

No, I’m wimping out and going to Watford. Really torn as it’s a really nice low-key race but I also need a new backpack and some other bits and pieces so taking the opportunity to visit the Centurion Running shop (coincidentally not far from Watford).

What’s the weather got to do with it though ?

Congratulations to Curious Orange - I'm going to get that place back on saturday.

No chance of the Hardway for me - I'm going to focus firmly on Leicester now the decision is made, I'm going to behave myself during this training cycle and only deviate slightly, for the Isle of Wight Half.

Best part of a hilly 14 miler in really hot conditions becomes not a lot of fun. The Maverick 23k at the end of June in 30 degrees was punishing, I’d rather not repeat the experience.

Fair enough, I don’t like the heat either. Mate of mine got airlifted off the first 13THW after passing out going down the Tank Tracks.......he was in the lead at the time. Spent a couple of days in hospital

I heard about that. He came back the year after which is when I ran it. From memory he finished second that year.

It is a good event and one I’d quite like to do again.

PB for me tonight but disappointed with the time. The 12:30 for 3K being 3/5 of my 5K SB.. Sat in at the back of my group. Chased down 4 but the next, Caroline Wood was 30 second ahead a gap too far.

Blustery conditions, not fully fit and a mathematical error thinking 6:26 miles would give me 12:00. Should be able to chase it down next year............

Can't be too down about a PB - especially at the age of 87?

Only time I’ve run it.

Just seen the video and I missed being lapped by not so young Trevor Day by a mere 10-20m. Paul Gasson missing after pulling out of E Brighton Parkrun with calf issues.

I was going to ask about The Gasson. Calves are buggers. Funnily enough having had my own calf issues, I wasn't in the least surprised when Jimmy Anderson was rendered lame by his. Calf injuries are 'old man' ones and Jimmy is getting on.

Posted on this before, but all of my calf issues (10+ years worth of tightness and tears) were down to a sticky sciatic nerve........which the physio told me is incredibly common (in middle age onwards). Neural flossing is the answer. Touch wood, I haven’t had a single calf issue (in 5 years now) since being given a couple of simple exercises to fix it.

Tell you what gents, I'm not looking forward to uploading my 5 x 1 mile hard session from today. The wind is my biggest excuse, naturally, but I was surprised - parkrun on saturday was 6:17 per mile average pace. My quickest single mile rep was 6:44, and that was largely with the wind at my back. I often find speed sessions difficult - whether that's because I'm on my own or not, I'm not sure - but I find it much easier to run at pace for a parkrun than in a deliberate session. I would have crashed the session with big nuts tonight but for making other plans without considering it!
