Further to your post below, Amazon do exactly what is suggested, taking your money when the order is shipped. Or at least they did with the last Harry Potter book that I ordered well in advance of shipping.

Well, our understanding is that we are not allowed to hold credit card details. Amazon may have a more complex banking arrangement, but our t&cs explain payment is taken at order. There are many other retailers operating the same way as we do, and ultimately if anyone is unhappy they can apply for a full refund.
