I have tried to give a balance between new and old. Cinema being my main interest outside of BHAFC I wondered what the good judgement of NSC would have as the ultimate Film Director.

It depends what you want from a director. Pure entertainment, probably Spielberg or Stone. Innovation, maybe Hitchcock or the French new-wave mob. Dialogue, Woody Allen or Tarantino. Effects, Cameron. But I'd pick Coppola over all.

I'd go with Stone aswell then Coppolla, then Spielberg, then Welles then Scorsese. Scorsese doesn't even come close to the top 4 though.

The best directed film of all time is Citizen Kane - Orson Welles

and honourable mention to Roberto Rossellini.

For my money Spielberg is way out in front. Noone even comes close to this man. He is a total genious. He whole repertoir is brilliant. The thing about Spielberg is that one of his weakest films such as Catch me if you can is still better than most directors greatest film. Schindler's List, ET, Close Encounters, Saving Private Ryan are his 4 masterpieces with the rest just merely very good or brilliant.

Jackson , Raimi, Stone and Cameron are the best of the current crop.

I often get the two mixed up, and I also thought it was best dictator - expected to see Knight in with Saddam, Hitler, Mussolini et al.

My brother suffers the same problem and went into a Courage pub once and asked for pint of dictators!!

On NSC for over two decades...
From that list I had to pick Ridley Scott, just 'cos his films are so damn moody. Beautifully shot. The pacing and style of Alien and Bladerunner are impecable. Gladiator is a tour-de-force in how to do an Epic Picture, and Black Hawk Down was a compelling watch.

Spielberg comes a very close second, as he captures the wonder of cinema and tells great stories.

The choice would have been much more difficult if Terry Gilliam and Stanley Kubrick were in the list.
