Just heard that Taj Foods has gone into administration. Sad news for those who look for choice for food shopping. Guess that will leave another store for Tesco to move into.

Hmmm, this could cause one or two issues with the Sussex CCC fruit challenge this summer...

Sad news. :(

I should say that my source is Twitter. I've not seen any mention of it elsewhere (although the Tweet was from a local councillor so should be reliable).

The Argus will probably have something about it next Monday

If true, that's very sad. I made a beeline for the Old Steine store when back last month, just to stock up on lemon grass and other Thai ingredients unavailable over here.

Guess there was less demand in cosmopolitan Brighton than they were expecting for exotic fruit & veg and misc gourmet treats?

That's a shame, been in there a few times when I visited Brighton.

I've always thought these type of shops could so themselves no harm by educated their customers what to do with the ingrediants.

My Twitter source says Manager at Old Steine branch vehemently denies Administration rumours.

The Thai shop in Baker Street is excellent for that sort of thing.

I'm getting more Twitter feeds about it - the administration notice was apparently posted two days ago but I've still seen no official confirmation or direct quote from the company.

They haven't done too badly in the past, if the size of their house in Dyke Road and the amount of luxury cars they have is any sort of indication.

A real shame that Brighton & Hove is littered with Tescos and Sainsbury's.

Have never been in there but there is obviously not sufficient demand for specialist shop of that nature.

There was a similar type multi nation specialist grocers/greengrocers in Teville Rd Worthing but that is now closed having only been open a few months.

How or why would a local councillor specifically be seen as reliable when (unless the council is one of the creditors) is has seemingly has nowt to do with them?

Or is that person posting as an interested party?

Because a councillor has a reputation to maintain and spreading wild rumours would not be the wisest thing to do. Politicians do tend to be more guarded about what they say or do - although as we've seen many times in the last year, that's not always the case.

I'm not saying your poster is right or wrong.

It's just that we've had someone on Twitter (of all places) saying one thing, and the company in question denying it. Somewhere out there lies the truth, and hopefully we'll be filled in on that in due course.

Be a shame if they do go under, mind.

The Taj family have made an absolute fortune from their stores, so it would suggest that there was sufficient demand. However, I would imagine that they are not able to compete with the large supermarkets when it comes to belt tightening. You can't compete with stores that are happy to make a loss of a whole host of products when they house practically everything you could possibly need.

There obviously was sufficient demand when the economy was buoyant.

The company HASN'T denied it. That's the point - there's been no official confirmation one way or another.
