NIGEL ADKINS will this week be offered the chance to take over at Brighton.

The Scunthorpe boss is wanted by new Seagulls chief Tony Bloom to lead his side back to the Championship and into their new ground.


Bloom has backed a £93million stadium at Falmer after spending more than 10 years at the run-down Withdean. Adkins, 44, has led The Iron to two promotions in three seasons and is ready to drop a division.


Brighton, near the foot of the table, have parted company with Russell Slade and Martin Hinshelwood took charge in yesterday's 4-4 FA Cup draw at Wycombe.


Manchester United reserves coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is also keen on the job but lacks experience.

What does that gutter paper know?

Pure guesswork. How does it know Adkins will be prepared to drop a division?.

Having said that, Adkins would be a good choice, but i'm hoping for better. :)

Managerial career
Adkins was in charge of Bangor City in the League of Wales, where he was at the helm for the Citizens' title wins in 1994 and 1995.

Adkins was appointed caretaker manager by Scunthorpe chairman Steve Wharton in November 2006, following the departure of the previous manager, Brian Laws. Adkins had previously held the role of physio at the club. After his spell as caretaker he was appointed as permanent manager on 7 December 2006.

Due to Adkins' previous role with the club, Scunthorpe supporters chanted "Who needs Mourinho, we've got our physio!" on the terraces of Glanford Park in his honour.

Adkins guided Scunthorpe to promotion from League One to the Championship with three matches to spare on 14 April 2007. The Sun newspaper named Adkins "Emergency Manager of the Year" in an article that looked at the match winning average of replacement bosses in the 2006–07 season following the departure of the previous manager.

It's in the NOTW IT'S GOT TO BE TRUE!! I bet he's already gone and got our club crest tatooed on both eyelids and has already sold his house in Scunny and is moving into a house close to Withdean at this VERY moment!! SENSATIONAL!! The only way is up!

On this sort of thing? Usually more than all the broadsheets put together. They actually go looking for stories, rather than sit back, wait for someone else to get it, and then write about it in long words.

Right, to all those who dont like the idea of Adkins maybe you need to have a serious think about who a realistic target is.

Of course nearly everybody wanted Coppell, but he has ruled himself out so who else has the skills Bloom is looking for and who actually come here.

Curbishley, not a chance...... Poyet, not had a managers job and maybe too much uncetainty about what he can actually do

Bloom has to think short to medium term at the moment and although Poyet or Solsjkear might be very good managers in time we need someone who has a proven track record in getting teams out of this division and Adkins fits that bill to a T.

I know everybody seeks loyality in football but it would appear that doesnt exist anymore and right now Bloom i'm sure will be looking at this as a purely business descision. At this moment in time we are a club that has a new stadium on the horizon which if we are paying Championship football can be a springboard to the future but ifwe are playing league one or lower could be te noose round this clubs neck. So if it means a manager coming in to take us to the next level before we plan bigger then so be it.

We need a manager that the players believe in as it would appear that we didnt have that in Slade so maybe appointing someone like Adkins, or Gannon again might be the best for the club in the next 2-3 years.

However, wouldnt Solsjkear be flair and think of the man utd fringe players we could get on loan :jester:

I wouldn't have a problem with him, he's done well at Scunthorpe so does have the track record at this level which we all crave and he's done it in the very recent past. What's not to like?

Personally, Im not "really" bothered who comes in as long as they do the job they are employed to do, and that in basic form means gets results!!

Adkins would be great if we can get him down here!!
What he has done with Scunthorpe, 2 promotions in three years is bloody good going, given the small budget i presume he was given, and what was not the greatest squad in our division. There doing alright this season, when you compare the size of that club and its fan base to teams like ipswich and reading who are in the drop zone, he is doing bloody well!
Now Poyet or Solsjaer would be flair, but neither, especially OGS know how to get out of this division as a manager. Adkins may not be "flair", but he'd certainly be one of the best men to change this side around!
Get him in!

So last weeks 'Coppell is Blooms target' tucked away in a small column doesn't count.

I think you will find that it's guesswork.

Time will tell I guess!

Anyone who thinks adkins isn't a good appointment clearly has no clue. It would be a great appointment.

Solsjkear would be FLAIR! But not sensible if adkins wants it
