Hi there, we are flying down to Gatwick on Saturday then getting train to the game. Afterwards we have a few hours to kill before flight home so are planning on breaking journey back to Gatwick. Can anyone recommended where to have a night out, train goes through somewhere called Worlds End? Worth a visit or should we just stick to Hurestpierpoint? Thanks in advance for any pointers.

Join the party (hopefully) around brighton station, plenty of good pubs, then get your train. hurstpierpoint is the middle of nowhere as far as public transport goes and I doubt there's much at Gatwick.

Yup definately stay in Brighton. Weather looks good for the weekend so why leave the coast in favour of some non-descript Sussex commuter town?

Worlds End Station is actually better known as Wivelsfield. If you want somewhere to go out the best place with the most pubs and eateries is obviously Brighton city centre and then catch the train from Brighton up to Gatwick. There's not much at all at Hurstpierpoint/Hassocks, just a pub right by the station and a couple more along the main street. The other bigger towns en route to Gatwick are Burgess Hill and Haywards Heath but these don't have anything like the choice of Brighton.

Remember that you only need to buy a train ticket from Gatwick to Haywards Heath. The travel voucher on your match ticket covers you for the rest of the journey. Preston Park station is the nearest to the ground.

What's wrong with a few hours in Central Brighton? Use the voucher that comes with your ticket to travel in (on the bus or train). Then catch the train from Brighton to Gatwick - three trains an hour until 23:37.

Worlds End?? Don't know why your ticket says that.

Your options are (at least as far as stations are concerned)

-stay in Brighton (far more pubs around and loads within a few minutes walk of the station).

-Preston Park- only one pub nearby and not really worth hanging around for

-Hassocks- the Hassocks pub is adjacent but it's a small and very uninteresting village

-Burgess Hill- the Railway pub is again, adjacent, but a tad chavvy. Ditto the Top House.

-Wivelsfield (this is what I think you mean by Worlds End) Don't be deceived, it's still Burgess Hill. Again there is a pub- the Watermill- next to the station, it's OK, but nothing to write home about.

-Haywards Heath- the Burrell is the nearest pub and it does have the advantage that there are more frequent/faster trains to Gatwick/London than the other stops. But it still sucks and is a very dull town.

-Three Bridges- don't be fooled, you're in Crawley now. Don't stop here under any circumstances. Not because you'll get killed. Just because it's a horrible town, which most Sussex people disown and try to palm off on Surrey.

No idea where you're getting Hurstpierpoint from. While it is undoubtedly a lovely and deeply sophisticated little village, home to only the finest people  it is three miles from the nearest railway station and thus not by any stretch of the imagination on the mainline back to London. A taxi from there to Gatwick would cost you thirty or forty quid I imagine.

Judging by the weather forecast, head for bars on the seafront, paricilarly the fortune of war. If it's real ale you're after, head to the evening star, the battle of trafalgar, the nelson, the great easten or the basketmakers, all within 5 minute of the station.you'd be daft to go anywhere but Brighton :)

What he said.

If you like your ale I would especially recommend the Evening Star or the Basketmakers Arms (often regarded as the best pub in Brighton), although the latter would no doubt be rammed as it's not the biggest.

Stick to brighton ;) believe me there is VERY little going on in Hurstpierpoint on a saturaday night!

As someone once pointed out, you can have a very enjoyable pub crawl encompassing some very decent boozers (the Nelson, the Battle of Trafalgar, the Evening Star) and not be much more than 100 yards from the front entrance to Brighton station.

If music is your bag then the Heart and Hand (traditional old style Brighton boozer-North Road) and The Albert (music based pub for all sorts...Trafalgar St...almost under the station entrance) are a good call.
