Below is a list of the average away support for League One clubs to date this season.

The list, taken from the Football Forum website, isn't quite complete as a few away attendances are missing. I'm rather disappointed we're below the likes of Northampton, Peterborough and Orient.

Leeds | 2,669 (1 missing)
Leicester | 2,120 (1 missing)
Peterborough | 1,456
Oldham | 1,149
Northampton | 934
Huddersfield | 884 (1 missing)
Leyton Orient | 849
Bristol Rovers | 831 (2 missing)
Stockport | 830
Swindon | 830
Brighton | 829
Millwall | 719 (1 missing)
MK Dons | 625
Hereford | 604
Carlisle | 597
Walsall | 588
Tranmere | 491
Hartlepool | 439
Scunthorpe | 435
Southen | 388 (2 missing)
Yeovil | 286
Crewe | 221 (2 missing)
Colchester | 211 (3 missing)
Cheltenham | 185

Got to look at geography though. I would guess that the average distance to away grounds table would looks fairly similar bar the top couple.

Yeah, there not really any ground's just down the road is there???
The nearest grounds are in London. And we havn't had any short trips to ANY away games this season have we???

Apart from maybe Sarfend

Looks a bit clearer as a graph (yes, I'm bored)

A very few teams away out front, then a bit clutch in the 800's and then a drop to Millwall (barely 700) and again to MK Dons (just over 600) and then the stragglers.

If you're really bored, how about a scatter chart plotting average away attendance against average distance to away grounds? You could plot a line of best fit, calculate how reliable it is, identifying the outliers who most buck the trend, etc.

That should keep you busy for a couple of hours ...

Averaging over 800 is quite a good figure considering that money is tight.

So, I have calculated the average distance travelled by away fans per match for this season. I know the list posted at the start of the thread only includes a few games, but this data includes all away games in League One for this season.

If average distance to away grounds was the determining factor for away travel volumes, this is how the table should look:

Walsall, 107 miles per game
Leicester, 111 miles per game
Northampton, 112 miles per game
MK Dons, 118 miles per game
Cheltenham , 122 miles per game
Peterborough, 124 miles per game
Crewe , 124 miles per game
Stockport , 131 miles per game
Swindon, 132 miles per game
Huddersfield, 136 miles per game
Oldham, 137 miles per game
Millwall, 140 miles per game
Leeds, 140 miles per game
Hereford, 140 miles per game
Leyton Orient, 141 miles per game
Scunthorpe, 146 miles per game
Bristol Rovers, 149 miles per game
Tranmere, 152 miles per game
Colchester, 168 miles per game
Southend, 168 miles per game
Yeovil, 178 miles per game
Brighton, 188 miles per game
Hartlepool, 199 miles per game
Carlisle, 226 miles per game

In order to find the most hardcore league 1 fans, you need to work out the average distance travelled per fan.

Complicated(ish) but could be interesting.

And comparing the "Number of Away fans average" table with the "Distance they have to travel" you can calculate who are the Slackers and who are the real fans. Shows who is under performing and who is over performing.

Table shows the difference between the position in the "No of fans at away games" table and the placing in the "Average Distance to travel" table.

Posts above show this. Carlisle fans travel an average of 226 miles, wheras Walsall fans only have to travel 107 on average.

however, being a long way off does not make you a good fan. A good fan goes to away games (you could argue), so my last table compares where the club is in terms of away fan averages with how far they have to travel.

Leeds fans are the "best" in as much as they travel in big numbers even though they have to travel 140 miles to an average match. Brighton come next. and so on.

To maybe answer Strings question - here is the number of miles travelled by fans travelling to an away match on average.

So Leeds fans clock up over 373,000 miles between them getting to a typical away game. Cheltenham's fans can only muster 22,600 between them per away game.

Whatever way you look at it, Brighton fan's do pretty well.

Apart from Orient, are there any grounds that we'll actually take over 1500 to?
