"A former England defender found in a drunken stupor on the floor of his sports car after he ploughed the convertible into a garden wall has admitted leaving another vehicle abandoned on a slip road, a court heard today.

Ilkeston Magistrates Court was told that Gary Charles, 33, shunted the silver Mercedes into a series of obstacles in Long Eaton, Derbyshire, in September, before he ran the vehicle into a hedge in a pub car park and fell asleep.

Kerry Clay, prosecuting, said that in May the ex-Nottingham Forest player, whose career was ended through injury last year, left excrement marks on the rear seat of a hire car found in Worcestershire.

She said police officers spotted that the vehicle had collided with a crash barrier on a slip road off the A448 Bromsgrove to Redditch by-pass.

Charles had earlier pleaded guilty to two counts of failing to provide a specimen - one of which relates to the car abandoned on the slip road - dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene of an accident.

"In May, police found the vehicle abandoned in a dangerous position on a slip road with music blazing out of the car and the keys still in the ignition," she said.

"They said there was a foul smell, a rancid odour, and saw excrement on the rear seat in the impression of a hand print, as if someone had been trying to wipe it off themselves."

Charles, of Highstairs Lane, Stretton, Alfreton, Derbys, was last month fined after he admitted being drunk and disorderly as he walked into Redditch that afternoon, swigging from a bottle of vodka."

Isn't that the guy that Gazza made the rash tackle on in a Cup Final and ended up giving himself a career threatening injury?

Ex-Nottingham Forest and Derby County footballer Gary Charles has pleaded guilty to being drunk and disorderly in a public place, where he kicked a door and spat at the windows of a hairdresser's, a court heard on Tuesday.

The man more known for being on the end of that tackle by Paul Gascoigne in the 1991 FA Cup Final than for his footballing ability, was arrested by police who found an incoherent Charles carrying a bottle of vodka and with, erm 'soiled' trousers.

A repentant Charles admitted to police that he did not drink heavily and it didn't take much to get him drunk, which is surprising considering his long list of drink-related offences.

Charles last week pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and failing to provide a specimen during an incident in Derbyshire in September, with The Evening Telegraph reporting that Charles ploughed his Mercedes into a wall and was found slumped in the vehicle, so inebriated that he couldn't stand.

In 1991, Charles was also involved in a fatal car accident where a 17-year-old was killed, although the result of an inquest returned a verdict of accidental death.

In 1993, he was fined for failing to provide a breath sample and in 1998 he was found guilty of assaulting a city taxi driver and fined £250.

Charles, who retired from football through injury was fined this £75 this time around but was given 28 days to pay after he convinced the magistrates that he had lost his wallet, while a second charge of failing to provide a specimen in a separate incident in Redditch, to which Charles has already pleaded guilty, will be heard later this month.

The ex-player's lawyer said: "He's embarrassed and wants to give a fulsome apology to the police and members of public involved."
