With subsidised travel it's easier to put up with more expensive tickets, or price rises in other areas - "the beer's gone up, but we don't mind too much because the club is helping us out with transport". There's little left to soften the blow. The club could probably get away with price...
If we'd have won the play-offs there would've been a £60m pay-off. Bringing in players on high wages to get that was a risk that the club thought was worth it. As it happens we didn't, and didn't get £60m to cover the costs and avoid FFP.

I don't think the club had, or has a 5 year plan. I believe they had a 2-year plan of get into the PL before FFP kicks in. I have no evidence to support this feeling, and it's my personal view.
It shows how difficult is is to run a club using the current model. FFP is an attempt (albeit seemingly misdirected) to change the model. We gambled on the PL and lost 2 seasons in a row, hence the overspend on players and wages. It looks like we're gambling again and the fans will cop any...
