Goals conceded per game with Steele is an alarming stat though, don't you think?
Steele's distribution is excellent and certainly a benefit, but I really hope that we prioritise a new keeper this summer that can do the distirbution as well as him but is better at the goalkeeping bit.
You're right we don't - although Sanchez was on the bench for Forest, Man U and Everton, so probably correct to assume it was his response to not being reinstated after Everton.
We also don't know that Sanchez refused to play, do we? Everyone has just assumed this. It could well be that he's...
After being dropped again after the Man U game, it was clear that Sanchez was not getting back into the side anytime soon even though he would have a load of other clubs happy to have him as their number 1. Steele has had to wait almost 5 years as a back-up keeper, so I cannot blame Sanchez at...
Youre right; it must genuinely be really hard to sit there and support your own team. At least when you're an outfield player on the bench, you've got a very good chance of getting on for 30 mins to prove your point due to either a tactical change or fatigue or injury to a starting player...
This is how I feel about Steele. He's great when we're in control of the game and the defence is confortable, but not so good as a last line of defence when it all goes wrong in front of him. This is sort of reflected in the scorelines in the games he's played where it's either a clean sheet...
2nd/3rd choice and playing a handful of cup games is no good for a young keeper developing his game. He'll only get better by playing as first choice somewhere so will more likley be loaned out to a Championship team.
Sanchez is easily the better shot stopper. Steele makes saves, but they're the sort of saves that Roy Keane would describe as doing his job.
Steele also has mistakes in him. He scored an OG last week, and almost gave Palace an undeserved equaliser in injury time. Thankfully, they're shit and...
He's being sold; I'm almost certain of it. If RDZ had any thoughts of integrating him back into the team, it'd have been after the Chelsea and Man U games, where he didn't do much wrong and made a superb save from a deflected Rashford shot late in the game. And if not then it'd have been after...
Thought Sanchez was solid for the 120 mins. I agree with a few other posters that I couldn't see Steele making that save from the deflected shot either. This is the big difference for me in that whilst Steele hasn't let us down, Sanchez is capable of making match-winning saves, or in...
One thing that I think is worth pointing out is that our actual goals against (24) is higher than our XGa (21). This stat reflects badly on the keeper, and although it’s by no means the worst in the PL, I’m sure it won’t have gone unnoticed.
For comparison, the difference between Ryan’s actual...
Nah. A keeper even close to Sanchez’ ability would be worth 20m+ in addition to commensurate wages. That’s a lot of money to be sat on any club’s bench for an average of 37 games a season, never mind a club like us with a moneyball philosophy.
I think the Scherpen is his back up/competition for the future - at least I assume we didn't pay 4m to loan him out for 4 seasons. Problem with the 'keeper position is that, unlike outfield positions where developing players can be used as impact subs or in alternative formations, the back-up...
