There's a world of difference between robust feedback and criticism (essential for a healthy democracy), and "vile abuse" (e.g. racism, sexism, death threats, rape threats, threats of violence etc.).
The kind of toxic environment that is all too often a feature of some contemporary political...
Just come back from the pub and was making the exact same comment to some mates. It's quite an eye opener coming on here. I'm proud to live in Brighton and Hove, a city that is generally enlightened compared with many places. And yet reading all the comments in this thread it's clear there's a...
Nah. Same as you. A concerned citizen. An advocate for a vibrant democracy - with everyone having a voice without fear of abuse, threats etc.
That's the thing - under the surface we all want the same thing.
It did include the last general election.
The report looked at the period January to June 2017. The election took place on Thursday 8 June 2017.
I didn't see the report you linked to. The one I refer to was undertaken by Amnesty International and is referenced in this link.
I think it's odd...
How does that tally with the statement "Diane Abbott MP accounts for almost half of the 25,688 abusive tweets sent to women MPs in the period analysed"?
I'm left wondering how May could get three times as much abuse as Abbott if Abbott is getting almost half of all the abusive tweets sent to...
To an extent you are right Mackenzie but, as I've tried to explain, think a bit more deeply about it and you should soon realise why it has caused outrage and why it is completely unacceptable in 2017 if we are to have a full functioning and vibrant democracy.

To what extent do you think it's "ridiculous" that she attracts 45% of all abuse on Twitter aimed at MPs?
To what extent do you think it's "ridiculous" that in 2017 she receives stuff like this: “Pathetic useless fat black piece of shit Abbott. Just a piece of pig shit pond slime who should be...

I did not - but I have listened to many accounts by black people who grew up in that environment in the subsequent years, and then thought about what I had heard
I have taken time to understand why blackface is deeply offensive to black people. Just google "blackface" and think about it. Anyone...
If everyone found her ridiculous she would not have elected MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington at every election since 1987....amongst her many other career achievements
And you are black?
If so, fair enough.
If not, then that you should probably think about it a bit more deeply.
Instead of asking what's wrong with it - try this question, what's right about it? There is no credible answer to this question.
Bear in mind, blackface went hand-in-glove with day...
FEMALE MPs have been subjected to 25,000 abusive messages in the last six months, with Diane Abbott being the target of more than half of them, Amnesty International revealed.
