Well that is total bollocks. Plenty of countries where people 'self flagellate' over their history (if that is how you want to see it).

Same. 'Embracing other cultures' has been part of an English identity more or less forever. I know that is a struggle for many to get their heads around, but it's as close to an historical fact as it is possible to get.

Depends on what 'berating' looks like I think. Expressing strong disagreement, and providing reasons for such is one thing and I'd agree with you. Personal abuse, threats and wishing injury because you disagree with his views, very different (and a bit pathetic).
