I have no default position, flawed or otherwise. I do though, recognise that there ARE plenty of vulnerable and disadvantaged people in our society. If you do not, or do not think that there are legitimate concerns over how they will be affected by massive cuts to already underfunded services...

The UKIP vote is much more difficult to call. You are correct of course, that a lot of them would be natural right-leaning Tories. Plenty of them though are disaffected LibDems, or single issue voters, for whom none of the main parties appealed.
Because this discussion is mostly about ideology, and those two parties are United in being diametrically opposed to that of the Tories.
Anyway, the point stands - even if you discount the SNP, it was still Con 11.3m Lab 9.3m - certainly not what could be described as 'not even close'.
In terms of seats, you are quite right, of course.
In terms of the actual mood of the populace, it was very close indeed.
The Conservatives polled 11.3m votes. Labour, with the similarly leftist SNP, polled 10.8m.
